Need a jump-start on your New Year's resolution to get fit? Hawai'i has its share of fitness experts who can provide good advice.
We found three locally produced Pilates-based DVDs that focus on toning and strengthening the core and back, promoting better balance and improving flexibility.
These exercise videos could also be a fitting gift for friends or family members on the Mainland, as the beach backdrops are an added bonus.
"PILATES FOR LIFE ENHANCEMENT"
Who: Dana Hershman
Film location: Lanikai Beach
Lowdown: This is a classic Pilates mat class, conducted by a woman who has been teaching Pilates for 10 years and practicing it for 15. She offers two variations for each exercise, one beginning and one intermediate to advanced. Exercises are taken straight from traditional Pilates: the hundred, the roll-up, rolling like a ball, and so on.
Cost: $19.95
Sold at: Borders, Ward Centre; University of Hawai'i-Manoa bookstore; Off the Mat; and www.Amazon.com
"CORE AND MORE"
Who: Gilad Janklowitz
Film location: Ka'ena Point
Lowdown: Gilad, who has been producing exercise videos and DVDs for decades, combines functional moves with Pilates principles. This is a fast-paced, hard workout focusing on the abs. Some exercises use light weights. He doesn't offer many traditional Pilates cues, so this workout would be better suited to those with intermediate or advanced abilities.
Cost: $19.95, or $49.95 for set of three "Ultimate Body Sculpt Series" DVDs
Sold at: www.Gilad.TV or through the Collage Video Catalogue
"PILATES FROM HAWAII"
Who: Eva Bondar
Film location: Beaches of Maui
Lowdown: Bondar offers a basic, slow Pilates mat class with lots of cues and explanations. The pace is unhurried and relaxed. This is a good DVD for beginners, but might be too slow for intermediate or advanced Pilates practitioners.
Cost: $19.95
Sold at: www.mauipilates.net
