Man accused of trying to kill son

HILO, Hawai'i — Police have charged a 65-year-old Opihihale man with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at his son on Christmas Eve.

James McKenzie was also charged with first-degree reckless endangering and first-degree theft for allegedly using a stolen firearm.

Police and fire rescue units were summoned to Opihihale at about 5:15 p.m. Sunday by a 33-year-old man who said he was in an argument with a family member that escalated into gunshots being fired at him at close range.

The 33-year-old suffered minor blast and burn marks to his arms.

He was treated for his injuries at the scene and released.

Police located McKenzie in Kealakekua about an hour later and arrested him. McKenzie was being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $57,000 bail.



MAN FOUND DEAD IN POOL IDENTIFIED

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island man who died Sunday at the Pahoa county swimming pool has been identified as 43-year-old David King.

King, of Pahoa, was found face down at the bottom of the shallow end of the pool at 9:23 a.m. Sunday, police said.

A county lifeguard pulled King from the water and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but King was unresponsive.

He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have ordered an autopsy.

WAILUKU MAN HIT BY 2 VEHICLES DIES

WAILUKU — A 37-year-old man died yesterday after being hit by two vehicles on Honoapi'ilani Highway north of Keanu Street in Wailuku, police said.

The Wailuku man, whose name has not been released, apparently ran onto the highway at about 4:30 a.m. and was struck by the driver's-side mirror of a southbound 2001 Audi sedan, police said.

He remained on the road and was then run over by an unknown motorist who did not stop after hitting the man, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at 7:30 a.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities in Maui County this year compared with 15 a year ago.



CULTURAL SOCIETY MARKS NEW YEAR

WAILUKU — Oshogatsu, New Year's traditions and customs, is the theme of the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui's general membership meeting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wailuku Hongwanji Mission Social Hall.

The Rev. Shinkai Murakami will make mochi (traditional rice cake), Yuiki and Ruth Fukumoto will present ozoni soup (traditional rice cake soup), while Amy Watanabe will demonstrate ohagi (mochi rice preparation). Other New Year's traditions will be featured, including displays of the Asian zodiac and kadomatsu, the traditional good luck symbol of bamboo, pine and flowers.

The agenda includes voting for nominees for the 2007 Nihon Bunka Award, which recognizes those who have shared their knowledge of Japanese culture and arts, and for the JCS Maui Exemplary Award for volunteerism.

The recipients will be recognized at the 38th annual JCS Maui Shinnen Enkai (New Year's) dinner Jan. 27 at the Maui Beach Hotel.

Saturday's event is open to members and nonmembers. Cost for food sampling and a bento lunch is $7 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

REROOFING WORK AT LIBRARY DELAYED

KAHULUI — Bad weather and other circumstances have delayed reroofing work at Kahului Public Library.

Officials say the library will remain closed until Jan. 9.

The due dates of library materials have been extended from Dec. 19 to Jan. 9.

DROWNING VICTIM WAS FROM KAPOLEI

A 36-year-old Kapolei man who drowned Christmas Eve was identified yesterday.

Pauufi Mikaele Jr. died Sunday after apparently drowning at an undisclosed location, according to the city medical examiner and police.

An autopsy has been ordered.
