ANTHONY "TONY" RUTLEDGE SR. has been named Hawai'i Businessman of the Year by the National Republican Congressional Committee, in part because of his recent service as Hawai'i's representative on the NRCC Business Advisory Council, which works to make sure small business has a voice in Congress. Rutledge, who owns the Star Beach Boys Inc. Waikiki Beach concession, is former head of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees, Local 5 labor union, and former president of the labor organization, Unity House.
Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta is joining the board of directors of Horizon Lines Inc., the No. 2 shipping line for cargo to Hawai'i. Mineta fills a vacancy created when retired Adm. James Holloway announced he was leaving the board at the end of the month.
Grove Farm Co. on Kaua'i has hired Michael Tresler, former Kaua'i County finance director, as its vice president. He will head the firm's property management and renewable energy projects. Tresler, a certified public accountant with a degree in business administration, assumes the position Jan. 8. He is a former University of Hawai'i football player.
RICHIE MIYAGAWA has been named to the newly created position of welcome office manager at W. onolulu Diamond Head, a Starwood Hotel and Resort. Miyagawa, who began his career with Starwood in 1997, will be responsible for management of the front desk, concierge and valet services at the hotel. Also hired by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Hawai'i is CANDICE KRAUGHTO, who, as regional communications manager, will handle all public relations, press and media coordination, and advertising projects for the 11 StarwoodHawai'i properties.
Allstate Insurance Co. has opened a new Honolulu office at 1259 S. Beretania St., owned and operated by seven-year insurance industry veteran, Kirk Paterson. The full-service agency offers a complete line of products and services, including auto, property, commercial and life insurance.
BEN KASHIWABARA has joined Bank of Hawaii as vice president and loan officer in the Commercial Real Estate Loan Division. His focus will include the bank's new Fast Track Commercial Real Estate Loan Program. Also, RENE H. TAM HO has been promoted from assistant vice president to vice president and regional sales coordinator for Bank of Hawaii in-store branches on O'ahu. She will manage and coordinate sales, service and compliance programs.
Allied Home Mortgage Capital Corp. has opened its third branch office in the state, at Ala Moana, and has named Wayne Lee manager. Allied Home Mortgage has more than 650 offices nationwide, offering a variety of mortgage products from more than 800 lenders. The company also has branches in Kailua and Waipahu.
