University of Hawai'i defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold interviewed for the head coaching job at Idaho State but currently is not a finalist.
Reinebold had discussions with ISU officials last weekend, and met with members of the school's Football Alumni Team, including defensive end Jared Allen of the Kansas City Chiefs.
"It was intriguing because of the fact that it was an opportunity to be a head coach, which everybody wants to do," Reinebold said. "That's the extent of it."
Idaho State has announced six finalists who will be invited for official on-campus visits.
"We might bring in more," said Frank Mercogliano, ISU's assistant athletic director for media relations.
"If something was going to happen, it would have had to happen prior to these kids getting back here" to practice for the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, Reinebold said. "Right now my focus, other than recruiting, is to win the bowl game. ... I'm not Mao Tse-tung. He had a five-year plan. I've never done that."
UH coach June Jones said he served as a reference for Reinebold.
"There was some interest," Jones said. "He's been a head coach, and he's done a great job since he's been here. I would hate to lose him. He's very smart, and the players play hard for him, and he teaches them the technique that's needed to win games."
BESS RECEIVES AN HONOR
College Football News named left slotback Davone Bess as a Sophomore All-America honorable mention.
In 13 games, Bess has 91 catches for 1,155 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Last year, he had 89 catches for 1,124 yards and 14 touchdowns.
"I'm happy for my name to be out there in that category," Bess said.
HAWTHORNE TIES KNOT
This week, the Warriors started preparing for the bowl game. Yesterday afternoon, cornerback C.J. Hawthorne prepared for the rest of his life.
Hawthorne and Tina Marie Martinez were married in a ceremony at Kahala Beach. A few teammates and members of Innovative Concepts, a Christian church, attended.
Hawthorne and Martinez met in Mississippi. They have been a couple for four years.
Last week, Hawthorne proposed.
"It was spontaneous," said Hawthorne, who serves as one of the team's spiritual leaders.
Free safety Jake Patek, who attended the ceremony, said: "C.J. is a great guy. He's a God-fearing man. I think this is great for him and his family."
KAFENTZIS TAKES A STAND
Left outside linebacker Tyson Kafentzis did not participate in his second consecutive practice, presumably because of discomfort in his right ankle. He had missed four games in the middle of the season because of a hairline fracture.
Although Kafentzis appeared to be limping in the Dec. 2 regular-season finale, he refused to divulge any problems. His reason for not practicing? "I'm taking a stand for the Hawaiian people," Kafentzis said. "They need to get their land back."
He promised to resume practicing this morning.
If Kafentzis is unavailable, Blaze Soares, Brashton Satele and C.J. Allen-Jones can be used as replacements, defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville said.
Soares appears to be the front-runner.
