Punahou's Kan helps West wallop East in football, 34-0

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Punahou senior Brett Kan ended his high school football career on a winning note, after all.

Kan, whose final passes in a Buffanblu uniform the past two seasons ended in heart-breaking interceptions, completed 7 of 12 for 114 yards and one touchdown Saturday night to help the West trounce the East, 34-0, in the 16th Annual HUB Goodwill Senior Bowl.

"This game was a lot of fun," said Kan, who has made a verbal commitment to play for Princeton University. "A lot of these (all-star) players, I've read about them in the paper but I never got to meet them, so to play with them was a lot of fun."

It probably was also at least a little redeeming for Kan, whose late-game interceptions ended thrilling comeback drives in the 2005 state championship game against Kahuku (a 28-21 loss) and 2006 regular season finale against Kamehameha (a 27-20 defeat).

Saturday night, his West team was clicking from the outset and dominated from start to finish.

"I guess the chemistry was there," Kan said. "In practices (the past two weeks), everybody got along and there was bonding."

Leilehua quarterback Bryant Moniz ran for a touchdown, threw a TD pass and kicked an extra point and the West defense held the East to just 89 total yards.

A capacity crowd of about 3,000 at Kamehameha's Kunuiakea Stadium watched the West pile up 352 yards of offense and come up with three interceptions — including two by 'Aiea's Mana Ohia — and a fumble recovery.

Moniz completed 10 of 14 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown, and rushed for 22 yards on three carries, including an 8-yard run for the game's final score with 3:01 remaining.

His 16-yard scoring pass to 'Aiea's Lofa Li'ili'i put the West up, 27-0, with 7:04 left in the third quarter. Moniz also kicked an extra point to make it 14-0 after Kan threw a 10-yard touchdown strike to Kapolei's Aaron Santiago.

Waialua's Caleb Fore later scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to help the West take a 21-0 lead into halftime. Fore's 4-yard TD pass to Radford's Kyle Blair started the scoring with 4:07 left in the first quarter.

Punahou receiver Miah Ostrowski (4 catches, 69 yards) was named the West's Offensive Most Valuable Player and Wai'anae linebacker George Kauwalu was named the West's Defensive MVP.

Kauwalu was part of an outstanding corps of West linebackers that also included Mililani's Josh Andrews, Leilehua's Mene Coffin and Kapolei's Kamuela Foki.

Farrington tackle Manu Tonga was named the East's Offensive MVP, and fellow Governor Andrew Noga, a defensive end, was named the East's Defensive MVP.

Bank of Hawai'i donated $250 to each MVP's respective league in the name of the player. That means the O'ahu Interscholastic Association will receive $750 and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu will get $250.

Coaches from Hawai'i, Oregon State, Oregon, Utah, Washington and San Diego State attended East and West practices the past two weeks.

The game also was available for viewing on the internet via live stream. Tau Harrington, the Senior Bowl's director of marketing and promotions, said Doris Sullivan of Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance helped alert 162 NCAA Division I-A and I-AA football programs and 60 Division II and NAIA programs about the live stream video.

"From our perspective, one of the most valuable things these players can take away from this game is tape of them in action," Harrington said. "When it became apparent that we weren't going to have live TV for this year's game, we quickly focused on other options for delivering game film for the boys to use as a recruiting tool."

Harrington said the Web cast should be available for viewing this week at www.hubseniorbowl.com

"It's a nice thing for family and friends to go back and watch, but one of the main purposes is for (college) coaches and scouts to see the game," Harrington said.
