Rainbow Wahine's Houston honored

Outside hitter Jamie Houston, who led seventh-ranked University of Hawai'i to two five-game victories over 19th-ranked Pepperdine last weekend, has been named Western Athletic Conference women's volleyball Player of the Week.
Houston, a sophomore from Huntsville, Ala., was the kills leader both nights, recording 21 on Friday and a career-high 28 Saturday.
Houston also had 19 digs in the first match and 13 in the second.

PETERS RECOGNIZED
Brigham Young-Hawai'i outside hitter Tuli Peters was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week after leading the Seasiders to four victories in Hilo.
Peters, a Kahuku High alum, averaged 6.42 kills per game and hit .329 as BYU-Hawai'i swept all four matches at the season-opening Hawaiian Style Classic. She was named tournament MVP.
Peters, a junior, is in her first season with BYUH after playing two years at Fresno State.
TEAM USA QUALIFIES
Team USA defeated Cuba, 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-13, Saturday in the semifinals of the 2006 NORCECA Boys Youth (19-under) Continental Championship in Bayaguana, Dominican Republic.
The victory qualified the U.S. team for the 2007 FIVB Boys Youth World Championships.
Team USA (4-1), coached by University of Hawai'i men's associate coach Tino Reyes and including Punahou's Erik Shoji and Iolani's Brad Lawson, played Puerto Rico (4-0) in Sunday's final. The score from the title match was not available.
"The win over Cuba was fantastic," Reyes said. "The team just wouldn't quit and kept fighting after being down 2-0. The staff kept preaching, 'Let's get better each practice and match,' and they certainly did. The boys did a great job."
GOLF
SOARES, MENESES WIN
Abel Soares and Sergio Meneses shot an 8-under 63 Sunday to earn Hawai'i's lone berth in the ESPN National Golf Challenge, which will be played Nov. 13-14 in Las Vegas.
William Paik and Dennis Lee shot a 61 to win the net division of the regional qualifier at Turtle Bay's Arnold Palmer Course.

'RAP' DEBUTS TODAY
Hawai'i Sports Rap will debut on KORL 690 AM today at 2 p.m.
The one-hour show, hosted by Randy Miyamoto and Lolly Griffin, will be every Tuesday and Thursday and will cover high school, college and pro sports.
