Saint Louis' defense shackles Leilehua, 20-0

For all of the attention paid to past offensive stars like Tim Chang, Jason Gesser and Darnell Arceneaux, Saint Louis School's prodigious football tradition was also built largely on a stalwart defense.
The Crusaders kept that tradition alive last night by shutting out Leilehua, 20-0, in non-league action at Aloha Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the season.
"Our goal is to hold every offense to zero (points)," said senior defensive end Scott Smith. "We worked hard all week and took steps to achieve it."
The challenge was formidable, considering Leilehua (1-1) returns senior quarterback Bryant Moniz, who was an Advertiser All-State second-team selection two years ago after leading the Mules to the Division I state championship game. Last night, he was limited to 8 completions in 13 attempts for 52 yards and was intercepted twice near the goal line.
Saint Louis also held Leilehua to 59 yards rushing and had a goal-line stand in the closing minutes, stopping the Mules after they had gained first-and-goal at the 2.
"We played a superior team tonight," Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said. "They executed well (on defense), especially in the red zone. We knew they were tough inside, so we tried to go outside with one-on-one matchups, and they still stopped us."
The defensive effort was needed as the Crusaders took a while to get going on offense themselves. Saint Louis had first-and-10 on the Mules' 15 in the game's opening drive, but managed only four yards in the next three plays and settled for Kenton Chun's 33-yard field goal.
The Crusaders did not score again until 1:29 remaining in the half, taking a 10-0 lead after Micah Mamiya's 27-yard touchdown pass to Ricksson Pacarro on third-and-10.
Leilehua advanced to the Saint Louis 34 on the ensuing series, but Jeffery Kahler intercepted a long Moniz pass at the 4-yard line.
Chun's second field goal, a 23-yarder, gave the Crusaders a 13-0 lead with 4:49 left in the third quarter, and the Mules fumbled away the ensuing kickoff. Two plays later, Lene Alaelua scored on a 5-yard run to help Saint Louis go up, 20-0.
"What the defense does is steady us in the game until the offense can get untracked," Crusaders coach Delbert Tengan said. "We try to capitalize on turnovers, but the defense is what keeps us in the game before that big play happens and we can convert off of it."
Following the last touchdown, Moniz led Leilehua on a 13-play, 62-yard drive to the Saints' 25, but Todd Nakano intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it to the 10. Earlier, Nakano prevented a big gain when he knocked away a potential sideline completion.
"Our corners did a good job," Tengan said. "We wanted to take away (Moniz's) quick passing game, especially the slants. I thought we did a good job taking those away."
After a slow start, Mamiya finished with 11 completions in 16 attempts for 157 yards, with no interceptions.
