Wai'anae Boxing Club had a successful summer, winning eight championship belts at Mainland meets, according to coach Freddy Pereira.

"I couldn't believe how well these kids performed," said Pereira, who has been coaching at Wai'anae for more than 40 years.

Dido Rodrigues, 12, at 75 pounds, and Jada Pereira, 11, at 65 pounds, each won titles at the Desert Showdown in Palm Springs, Calif., in July and the Ringside World Championship in Kansas City, Mo., in August.

Both events featured international competition.

Antone Pereira, 15, won a title in the 132-pound division and was named the Outstanding Boxer at the Desert tournament. He also was runner-up in Ringside.

Other Wai'anae boxers who won at the Desert event were Hannah Smith, 18, at 119; Jonathan Dinong, 13, at 119; Thomas Mathias, 16, at 125. Runners-up were Shayson Soares, 11, at 65; Ricky Tangera, 19, at 141 and Safire Pereira, 16, at 110.

Soares, Safire Pereira, Antone Pereira and Dinong also were second in their divisions at the Ringside tournament.

Safire also won a silver medal at the National Junior Olympics in Marquette, Mich., in June.

Coach Pereira said Winston Gabriel of Baha Taco helped the team defray the cost of equipment and travel.

13-BOUT AMATEUR EVENT TOMORROW AT PALOLO

USA Boxing Hawai'i Association Inc., Palolo Boxing Club and Kawano Boxing Club are sponsoring a smoker tomorrow at Palolo District Park.

The 13-bout card begins at 6 p.m. The double main event features Sasha Tatsuhara (APBC) and Gina Ramos (Kawano) at 100 pounds, and Jesse Jones (PearlSide) and Kainoa Oca Kauhane (Kawano) at 165 pounds).

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

TENNIS

THEY'RE OFF TO NATIONALS

Several Hawai'i tennis teams advanced to the national championships after winning at the Hawai'i Section Championship on Maui last week.

The women's winners were Double Trouble, of Honolulu (level 2.5, captain Monica McClelland); Team 96797, of Waipahu (3.0, Nalani Sue); You're Just J, Honolulu (3.5, Mari Cadaoas); Alley Kats, Honolulu (4.0, Loretta Damas), and Kona Mana, Kailua, Kona, Hawai'i (4.5, Kiki Lau).

The men's winners were McCully Ducks, Honolulu (3.0, George Uedoi); Clock & Trophy, Honolulu (3.5, Dennis Yamamoto); Waipi'o S, of Ho-nolulu (4.0, Ryan Perreira), and TNT of Lihue, Kaua'i (4.5, Glenn Ikemoto).

The championships will be held at various sites on the Mainland, starting Sept. 29.

SOUTH AFRICA FEATURED

A team from South Africa will play Team Bacardi USA at Hawai'i Polo Club on Sunday at Mokule'ia Field.
