Nelson's 66 leads Big Island tourney

Kirk Nelson of Makena Golf Club fired a 6-under-par 66 for a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Mauna Kea Resort Stroke Play Championship yesterday.
Defending champion Kevin Carll of Turtle Bay shot a 3-under 69 and stands in second place at the Mauna Kea Golf Course on the Big Island.
Ron Castillo Jr. of Kiahuna Golf Club and Brendan Moynahan of Hualalai are tied for third at 2-under 70.
In the senior division, Rodney Acia of Hilo Muni leads at 1-under 71. Kerry Greenwood of Leilehua leads the super senior division at 83.
The Big Island Candies team won Sunday's pro-am with a 10-under 62. The team was led by professional Kevin Hayashi and amateurs Allan Ikawa, Kevin Endo, Brian Ikawa and Cary Honda.
A total of 37 Island professionals are competing in the 54-hole stroke play event with a total purse of $20,000.
SURFING
CARROLL TIES FOR THIRD AT FRANCE EVENT
Nathan Carroll of Sunset Beach tied for third place in the Sooruz Lacanau Pro on Sunday at Lacanau, France.
Carroll was eliminated in the semifinals by France's Jeremy Flores, 15.1-11.5. Flores went on to win the contest.
Carroll received $3,750. Kaua'i's Dustin Barca tied for 13th place.
The contest was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series.
ABUBO FINISHES TIED FOR THIRD AT BRAZIL
Megan Abubo of Waialua tied for third place in the Billabong Pro Girls contest on Sunday at Itacare, Brazil.
Abubo was eliminated in the semifinals by Brazil's Maria Tita Tavares, who went on to win the contest.
Abubo received $1,700. Leilani Gryde of the Big Island tied for ninth place.
The contest was part of the women's World Qualifying Series.
HAWAI'I'S KAI ON U.S. TEAM TO PLAY CHINA
Former University of Hawai'i star Natasha Kai was named to the U.S. women's soccer team which will play China on Sunday at Bridgeview, Ill., as part of its preparation for World Cup qualifying.Kristine Lilly will return after missing two matches. Midfielder Angela Hucles, a member of the team that won the 2004 Olympic gold medal, also returns for the game against China.
The U.S. team also announced that it has added an exhibition against Iceland on Oct. 8 at Richmond, Va.
