Lambert, Metzger win volleyball title

Top-seeded Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger swept fifth-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal 21-19, 21-17 to win the men's AVP Brooklyn Open yesterday at New York.

Lambert and Metzger, both Punahou graduates, won $25,000. Gibb, of Bountiful, Utah, and Rosenthal, of Redondo Beach, Calif., pocketed $18,000.

With the victory, Lambert and Metzger extended their lead in the race for the Crocs Cup from 18 points to 22 points over Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.

The win in Brooklyn is the fourth win of the season for Lambert and Metzger.

Metzger said that it was great to play in New York for the first time.

"The New York crowd was different than our usual crowd in California," Metzger said. "They showed up late but came out in full force."

MIRA COSTA CAPTURES ANN KANG INVITATIONAL

Mira Costa (Calif.) defeated defending champion Los Alamitos (Calif.), 25-13, 25-17, in the finals of the Ann Kang Invitational last night at Iolani School.

Newport Harbor (Calif.) finished third in the 20-team girls varsity tournament. U.S. men's national team swept in Serbia

Serbia & Montenegro swept the U.S. men's national volleyball team, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23, in a 2006 FIVB World League pool play match at Novi Sad, Serbia yesterday.

The U.S. men (5-7) completed pool play in third place.

Former University of Hawai'i player Clay Stanley did not play.


BASEBALL

SUZUKI SELECTED TO U.S. QUALIFYING ROSTER

Maui's Kurt Suzuki, a Double-A catcher in the Oakland Athletics organization, is one of 24 players selected for Team USA's Olympic qualifying roster.

Suzuki, a 2001 graduate of Baldwin and a 2004 national player of the year for Cal State Fullerton's College World Series championship team, is among a group of prospects and minor league veterans trying to make the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Suzuki was hitting. 285 with seven home runs, 26 doubles and 55 RBIs for the Midland Rockhounds of the Texas League. In July, he played in the Futures all-star game for top minor league prospects. He was drafted by the Athletics in the second round in 2004.


GOLF

HAWAI'I TIED FOR FIFTH AT HOGAN CUP EVENT

Hawai'i junior golfers shot a 6-over-par 222 and were tied for fifth place after the first round of the 38th Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches yesterday at the Riverside Golf & Country Club at Portland, Ore.

Southern California leads the two-day tournament at 8-under 208.

Maui's Nick Shimozaki was tied for fourth at 2-under 70, three shots behind leader Isaiah Telles of Tualatin, Ore.

Other Hawai'i golfers were: Big Island's Henry Park (74, t-12th), O'ahu's Colton Knedler (78, t-29th), and Big Island's Max Bonk (80, t-38th).

RODRIGUEZ'S 67 LEADS AMATOUR EVENT

Samuel Rodriguez III fired a 5-under 67 for a four-stroke lead after yesterday's first round of the Amatour Hawaii 2006 Kane'ohe Klipper Battle at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.

Blaine Kimura and Allan King were tied for second at 1-under 71. The tournament concludes today.
