Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko and former Hilo resident Kimberly Kim each won two matches yesterday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Kaneko, a junior at Sacred Hearts, defeated Jennifer Osborn of Huntington Beach, Calif., 2 and 1, in the round of 16. Kim, of Mesa, Ariz., ousted Alison Whitaker of Australia, 3 and 2.

In the second round (of 32) yesterday, Kaneko defeated Pei-Lin Yu of Chinese Taipei, 2 up, and Kim beat Lauren Espinosa of Hickory Creek Texas, 1 up.

Carlota Ciganda of Spain defeated Stanford sophomore Mari Chun of Pearl City, 4 and 2.

In the round of 16, Kaneko took a 1-up lead by winning the par-4 14th hole when Osborn double-bogeyed. Osborn also double-bogeyed the par-3 15th to give Kaneko a 2-up advantage. They halved the next two holes giving Kaneko the match.

Kim birdied the par-3 12th hole to take a 1-up lead, and took a 2-up lead with a par on the par-3 15th. Whitaker bogeyed the par-4 16th hole giving Kim a 3-up lead with two holes remaining.

Kim, 14, is the youngest remaining player in match play. Whitaker was a semifinalist in the Women's Amateur last year.

"It feels like an honor," Kim said of advancing. "First, I just wanted to make the cut (in stroke play) to make my family happy."

Kaneko faces Stacy Lewis of The Woodlands, Texas, who defeated Maria Jose Uribe, of Colombia, 2 up. Kim plays Eileen Vargas of Colombia, who beat Mina Harigae, of Monterey, Calif., 1 up.

The 18-hole quarterfinals are today, followed by the 18-hole semifinals tomorrow. The 36-hole finals are on Sunday.

Last year's Amateur was won by Morgan Pressel, who is now a pro on the LPGA Tour.

WESTFIELD JUNIOR PGA

Honoka'a senior Sean Mae-kawa, the state high school runner-up, was the only Hawai'i golfer in the top 40 after yesterday's opening round of the 31st Westfield Junior PGA Championship. The 72-hole event is being played at Westfield Center Country Club in Ohio.

Maekawa shot 38-36—74 and trails leader Ryan Peterson by 19 shots in the boys division. Peterson's 6-under-par 65 tied the record for lowest first-round score. Hawai'i's Chan Kim and Robert Greenleaf both shot 77 and share 62nd.

Kim, the state high school champion, is a Kaimuki junior. Greenleaf, from Makawao, is a freshman at Seabury Hall.

Marika Lendl, whose father Ivan won 94 titles in his pro tennis career, shot the only sub-par round in the girls division with a 1-under 70. Kaua'i High senior Miki Ueoka is 16 back.

Westfield is the PGA of America's major junior event. It has a field of 156, made up of one boy and one girl champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections, winners of selected national junior tournaments conducted earlier in the year, special invitees and past Junior PGA Championship winners, who have not reached their 19th birthdays and have not started college.
