Makawao, Maui's Robert Greenleaf earned the Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series Player of the Year award for the boys' 13-to-15 division. The Junior Series just completed its 11th year, holding 10 events nationwide.

Greenleaf, a Seabury Hall freshman, traveled to six events this summer and collected 945 points. He played in the first five tournaments of the season, picking up his first win at the fifth event at Shaker Hills Golf Links in Harvard, Mass.

Greenleaf returned home and captured his age division at the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Championship, then went back to the Mainland to clinch Player of the Year honors.

"This was my goal at the beginning of the year, and it feels good to fulfill it," said Greenleaf, whose father Bill is Director of Instruction at The Dunes at Maui Lani. "I enjoy being able to watch myself improve from year to year."

Greenleaf, Kaua'i High senior Mike Ueoka and state high school champion Chan Kim, who just won the Army Invitational, will represent Hawai'i when the 31st Westfield Junior PGA Championship tees off today in Ohio. The 72-hole tournament is the final qualifying event for the 2006 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team.

ACES, HANA HOU!

Kailua, Kona's Ed Kihara and Alvin Haraguchi hit back-to-back holes-in-one at Makalei Golf Club on July 30. Haraguchi, 54, hit a 7-iron in on the 164-yard 15th hole. Kihara, 70, kept up the torrid pace by knocking in a 6-iron.

"I play a couple times a week, but don't have a handicap," Kihara said. "My score was so bad, I'm ashamed to say I had a hole-in-one."

It was Kihara's second ace and the first for Haraguchi, who plays "maybe four to six rounds a year."

The inaugural Makalei Amateur Tournament will be Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 11 and 12. The tournament is open to male and female amateurs with valid USGA handicaps. Entry forms are available at the Makalei golf shop, by phone (808-325-6625) or e-mail (makaleigolf@hawaiiantel.net).
