Fujikawa, Kono aid West's cup win

Stephanie Kono won her match and Tadd Fujikawa halved his as the West defeated the East, 31-19 to retain the American Junior Golf Association's Canon Cup in Lake Forest, Ill.

Kono beat Michelle Grilli, 3 and 2 and Fujikawa halved his match with Tommy Chung Hao Mou.

Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident now living in Mesa, Ariz., lost her match, falling to Joy Kim, 5 and 4.

The annual event brought together the 10 best male and female golfers from east of the Mississippi River and matched them against 10 from the west.

MASUDA LEADS ARMY

Ryan Masuda shot a first-round 4-under 68 yesterday to take a one-shot lead in the Army Invitational championship at Leilehua Golf Course.

Masuda shot 36-32 and is one shot ahead of Pierre-Henri Soero (34-35), Chan Kim (33-36) and Brandan Kop (36-32) in the championship flight.

Last year's champion, Matthew Ma, opened with a 38-34—72.

MERKLE TIES FOR 11TH

Kristina Merkle tied for 11th and Alex Ching shared 33rd after yesterday's final round of the 38th Trusted Choice Big "I" Junior Classic. The tournament was played at Odessa Country Club in Texas. All 50 states were represented with fields of 54 girls and 108 boys.

Merkle shot 77 in each of the final two rounds for a four-day total of 16-over-par 304. The sophomore finished 14 shots behind winner Kristen Schelling, of Mesa, Ariz.

Cameron Edens, a senior from Arizona, won the boys' title with a 17-under 271. Ching, a Punahou junior, closed with a 72—297 to move up 15 place.

  • Makawao's Robert Greenleaf tied for fifth in the boys' 13-15 division at the Westbrook Country Club Event on Wednesday in Mansfield, Ohio. Greenleaf shot 76—225 to finish seven shots behind the winner.


    YOUTH BASEBALL

    PEARL CITY 13-14 WINS

    A.J. Johnson had two doubles and drove in two runs and Pearl City used a seven-run second inning to rout Utah, 11-1, yesterday in the Little League Junior Division (ages 13-14) Western Regional at Beaverton, Ore. Right-hander Shayne Nakata pitched a complete-game over five innings. He also had two hits.

    Pearl City (2-0) plays Idaho tomorrow, Alaska on Sunday and Nevada on Monday.


    COLLEGE BASKETBALL

    MAUI BRACKETS SET

    NCAA runner-up UCLA will play host Chaminade in the opening round of the 2006 EA Sports Maui Invitational.

    The matchups for the eight-team tournament to be held Nov. 20 to 22 were announced yesterday. The winner of the UCLA-Chaminade game will advance to a semifinal against the winner of the Kentucky-DePaul first-round game.

    The other bracket has Oklahoma, against Memphis, and Purdue playing Georgia Tech.


    FOOTBALL

    CAMP COACHES SOUGHT

    Volunteer coaches are needed to coach youths from ages 12 to 14 at a free NFL-sponsored Junior Player Development Tackle Football Clinic on Aug. 19.

    Experience is not required to be a coach at the clinic.

    Coaches will receive an NFL JPD training DVD, a practice manual, an NFL JPD coaching shirt, jacket, shorts and hat.
