Mayor to lead beach cleanup

About 250 volunteers have signed up to join Mayor Mufi Hannemann in a cleanup effort of Wai'anae Coast beaches tomorrow starting at 7:30 a.m.
Volunteers will meet at Poka'i Bay Park and deploy to Kahe Beach Park, Tracks Beach Park, Lualualei Beach Park and Ma'ili Point and work through the morning. They will pick up trash, and paint and clean the facilities and grounds.
Na Hoaloha O Wai'anae Beach Park Cleanup Day is a prelude to the heavy maintenance the city will perform at its Wai'anae Coast parks. Wai'anae District Park is next on the work schedule.

MAN DIDN'T PAY FOR COPPER PIPES
A 50-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon after police said he tried to steal copper pipes from the Home Depot store in Iwilei.
Police said the man was seen loading a cart with the copper piping about 4:30 p.m. The man taped the pipes together and placed Home Depot bags on the ends of the pipes, police said.
The man pushed the cart out of the store without paying for the merchandise, police said. Store security guards detained the man and called police.
The man was being held last night and faced a charge of second-degree theft. The value of the pipes was estimated at $3,700, police said.

TAKE JOURNEY TO LAND OF 'OZ'
Kristi Kashimoto, who has been performing in musicals for more than 13 years in New York City, Hawai'i and with national tour companies, will direct the O'ahu Arts Center presentation of "The Wizard of Oz" on Oct. 14 at Mililani Mauka Community Park.

BIG BROTHERS, SISTERS FORMING
The state Office of Youth Services has granted Kaua'i County $60,000 to start a Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
County anti-drug coordinator Roy Nishida said the program, which provides volunteer older mentors to children, could begin in October. The county will be looking for adults and high school juniors and seniors, and hopes to team up 60 elementary school kids with older Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
"Research indicates that Little Brothers and Sisters in the program are less likely to begin using illegal drugs, consume alcohol, skip school and classes, or engage in acts of violence," Nishida said.
