Hawai'i drops two in softball

Kymberly Silagyi hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th as Nevada defeated Hawai'i, 4-3, yesterday to complete a sweep of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader in Reno, Nev.
Cindy Elkins opened the 10th with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Silagyi's hit to left as the Wolf Pack improved to 24-28 overall and 7-7 in the WAC.
Brandi Peiler and Tyleen Tausaga hit solo homers, and Jessica Morton pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before surrendering the winning run as the Rainbow Wahine fell to 27-19 and 7-6.
Nevada scored seven runs in the fourth inning to win the opener, 7-4.
Tanisha Milca and Alana Power hit two-run homers in the sixth for Hawai'i, which had two runners on base with one out in the seventh but could not score.
SAILING
RAINBOWS' RUN ENDS
The University of Hawai'i co-ed sailing team failed to qualify for the nationals after placing fourth yesterday at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Team Race Championships at Redwood City, Calif.
The Rainbows had competed in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Team Race Nationals the past five years.
Hawai'i finished yesterday's event with a 5-7 record. Host Stanford placed first and USC second to earn the two spots for the nationals.
The Rainbows will compete in the PCIYRA Coed Dinghy Championships today and tomorrow in San Francisco.
KAYAKING
GOLD FOR ISLE PADDLER
Hawai'i Olympian Lauren (Spalding) Bartlett won the K-2 500 meters with Carrie Johnson on the first day of the USA Canoe/Kayak Sprint U.S. Team Trials yesterday at Chula Vista, Calif. It was only the fourth time the two had raced together.
Bartlett, from Kula, Maui, also finished third in the K-1 500 as more than 50 of the best flatwater sprint paddlers in the country raced for spots on the Senior and Junior national teams.
Kane'ohe's Brandon Woods and partner Morgan House were edged out of first in the final meters of the men's K-2 500. Woods also took a fourth in the K-1.
Kailua's Andy Bussey, another 2004 Olympian, was third in the K-2 with Daniel Krawczyk.
Competition continues today with 1000-meter races.
BOXING
MCKEE FALLS IN SEMIS
Light flyweight national champion Luis Yanez won a 5-0 decision over Hawai'i's Keola McKee last night in a semifinal bout of the 2006 Golden Gloves at Omaha, Neb.
Yanez, of Duncanville, Texas, controlled the 106-pound bout throughout, outworking McKee to win his second unanimous decision of the tournament.

BYUH HIRES COACH
Jeff Miller, a former player and assistant coach at Brigham Young-Hawai'i, has been named head coach of the Seasiders' new men's soccer program, the school announced yesterday.
Miller was a goalie for the Seasiders from 1997 to 1999, then helped coach the team in 2000 before BYUH dropped the sport.
"I am extremely excited that BYU-Hawai'i has brought back men's soccer," said Miller, who has run his own businesses in Hawai'i and Idaho the past few years. "BYU-Hawai'i has an outstanding sports history and I hope we can build a soccer program that will add to that tradition."
