A thousand trees raised by Malama o Manoa members will be given away from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Manoa District Park Pavilion off Ka'aipu Street. Plumeria, white hibiscus, kamani, milo, kukui, hau, mountain apple and more will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Professional arborists will be available to offer advice and Boy Scouts of Troop 1 will help carry trees to cars. Volunteers will assist with parking and traffic control.

Malama o Manoa is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the special qualities of historic Manoa Valley.

HELP SOUGHT WITH ACCIDENTS

WAILUA — Kaua'i police are seeking information about a chain of accidents Monday that injured six people.

A sport utility vehicle that fled the scene had sideswiped another car, launching the series of accidents on Kuhio Highway near Wailua Golf Course.

Police said a tourist's car pulled off South Leho Drive and onto the storage lane on Kuhio Highway and was sideswiped by the larger vehicle. The visitor pulled to the roadside. The driver of a southbound car swerved around the visitor's parked car, lost control and crashed into the side of a northbound van carrying nine construction workers. The van hit a curb and rolled over.

Police said five of the van passengers and the driver of the southbound car suffered minor injuries. Police are looking for witnesses and continue to seek the driver of the SUV that launched the accidents. Call Sgt. Robert Gausepohl at 241-1611.

SENATE CONFIRMS UH STUDENT REP

Michael Dahilig, a graduate student at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, was unanimously confirmed yesterday by the state Senate as the student representative on the UH Board of Regents.

Dahilig, a graduate of Punahou School, is a former student body president of the Associated Students of the University of Hawai'i. State Sen. Clayton Hee, D-23rd (Kane'ohe, Kahuku), the chairman of the Senate Higher Education Committee, described Dahilig as "a tremendous asset to the board."

Gov. Linda Lingle appointed Dahilig last September to a term that expires in June 2007.

WALKS SUPPORT ARTHRITIS CAMP

The Arthritis Foundation will hold three fundraising walks on O'ahu to raise money to support Camp Hope, a three-day, two-night juvenile arthritis residential summer camp.

The walks are one-mile mall courses with live music, dancing, food, prizes and entertainment. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and walks begin at 8:30 a.m. May 6 at Pearlridge Center, Uptown; May 7 at the Windward City Shopping Center; and May 13 at the Aloha Tower Marketplace. There is no registration fee, but everyone is encouraged to raise $100 or more to receive the official 2006 Arthritis Walk T-shirts.

KAHALU'U

MEETING FOCUSES ON AREA'S FUTURE

Planning for Kahalu'u's future will continue at a community meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kahalu'u Elementary School cafeteria, 47-200 Waihe'e Road.

This workshop is the second in a series to create a master plan for the area. The agenda includes prioritizing planning options and potential improvement projects.

Projects include improving bicycle/pedestrian paths, creating a "main" street, removing fences to improve views, developing an entrance to Kahalu'u and removing or replacing the banyan at the Hygienic Store.

LIBRARY, BOOK DROP CLOSED

'Ewa Beach Public & School Library and its book drop will be closed through at least Friday for repairs, renovation and maintenance.

Two programs, "Do Re Mi Music" and "Ku'ula, the God of Fishing" puppet show, scheduled for today and tomorrow, respectively, have been cancelled.

It has not been determined when the library will reopen.
