Is a culinary career beckoning to you around this graduation time? David Paul's Lahaina Grill on Maui is accepting applications for its third Maui Chef Scholarship from Maui public-school seniors interested in a culinary career. The $3,000 scholarship will go to a student planning to enter the Maui Community College Culinary Academy program in fall.

"It is a very thrilling prospect to award such a large sum of money to a deserving high-school graduate on Maui," said chef-owner Jurg Munch. Applicants must show a good GPA, write an essay and submit a recommendation letter. For more information, call (808) 661-8005, ext. 2. Deadline is May 19.

COCONUT LIBATION

MAUI BREWING CO. BRINGS HOME GOLD

Coconut Porter and Red Cock Doppel Bock might sound like plumbers' jargon, but to brewing experts they're winners. Maui Brewing Co. took two medals at the World Beer Cup this month in Seattle: a gold for its Coconut Porter brew and a bronze for the bock, both made in Kahana, Maui. "This is the first time a Hawaiian brewery has earned the awards," reports managing partner Garrett Marrero. The company also took two silver medals at the Great American Beer Festival in October 2005.

The Coconut Porter, brewed with local coconut, won in the "Herb and Spice Beer" category out of 52 entries. The Red Cock Doppel Bock won in the "German Style Strong Bock" category out of 27 entries.
