An update on Hawaiian Electric Co.'s trial plans to transmit high-speed Internet over power lines will be discussed Wednesday at a meeting of the HAWAI'I TELECOMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION. Speaking will be Earle Ifuku, manager of HECO's Customer Installations Department, who will give an overview of the business, technical and regulatory aspects of the project. Also to be discussed will be the electric company's interest in Smart Grid utility applications, which, among other things, would allow real-time meter readings, eliminating the need for house-to-house meter reader visits, as well as substation and outage monitoring. The workings of Sennet Capital, a recently-founded merchant bank by managing partner John Bower, Kenton Eldridge and Richard Lim, will be previewed Thursday at a meeting of the Hawai'i Venture Capital AssociAtion. A merchant bank is an investment bank for a group of private individuals, and unlike venture capital firms, tends to manage a wider range of business financing activities, including raising equity and debt. Energy-related economic issues for Hawai'i, and a forecast for our future economy are on tap for the HAWAI'I ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION'S 16th annual conference on economic issues. The Friday gathering — themed "WHY NOT MORE CHANGE AT $65 PER BARREL?" — is scheduled 7:45 a.m. (registration) to 3 p.m., at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, South Pacific Rooms. Scheduled throughout the day are moderated discussions on transportation fuels, electric power and alternate energy. Luncheon keynote speaker is Dustin Shindo, chief executive officer of Hoku Scientific, the Kapolei-based maker of fuel-cell membranes.
