Irons ousted; Slater wins

Kaua'i's Andy Irons was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro yesterday.
The final day of the four-day contest was completed in 6-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.
Australian Mark Occhilupo beat Irons, 18.83-11.77. Irons received a score of 8.77 (out of 10) midway through the heat, but could not find another high-scoring wave to match Occhilupo.
World champion Kelly Slater of Florida won the contest, defeating Australian Joel Parkinson in the final.

UH SECURES SCORER
The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team received an official letter of intent from recruit Riley Luettgerodt yesterday.
Luettgerodt, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward, averaged 26.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists as a sophomore last season at Chemeketa Community College (Ore.). He made an oral commitment earlier this week to play for the Rainbow Warriors next season.
Luettgerodt will be a junior at Hawai'i next season and will have two seasons of eligibility.
Awards banquet tonight: The annual awards banquet for the Hawai'i men's basketball team is scheduled for tonight at the Hawai'i Prince Hotel. Tickets are $45 per person. No-host cocktails begin at 6 p.m., with dinner and the program to follow around 7 p.m. For ticket information, call the UH basketball office at 956-6501.

UH-HILO LOSES, 7-4
The University of Hawai'i stranded 10 runners in losing to Texas-Arlington, 7-4, yesterday at Arlington, Texas.
The Mavericks improved to 18-22, while the Vulcans fell to 15-31.
