Chun wins wrestling crown

Clarissa Chun, a Roosevelt High alum, outpointed Stephanie Murata of Colorado Springs, Colo., in the 105 1/2-pound title match at the U.S. National Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas yesterday.
Chun had lost in the title match her four previous attempts.
In the men's division, Henry Cejudo became one of the few high school wrestlers to win a national title when the 19-year-old beat Matt Azevedo, 6-4, to capture the 121-pound division.
Cejudo, one of 21 champions crowned, is a resident of the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Spring, Colo., and said he is skipping college to train at the facility for international competition.
SOFTBALL
HILO BEATS CHAMINADE
Sarah Weisskopf pitched a five-hitter and Leo Sing Chow batted 2 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chaminade, 9-2, yesterday at UHH field.
Weisskopf walked one and struck out one in a game called after six innings because of rain.
The Vulcans' Vanessa Badosa batted 3 for 3 with two runs and Natalie Fujimoto went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
The second game was rained out.
Hilo improved to 27-15 and Chaminade fell to 10-25.
HPU SWEEPS BYUH
Courtney Kessell pitched a two-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 4-0, to sweep a doubleheader yesterday at HPU Windward Field.
Krystal Plunkett batted 3 for 4 and Kara Wedemeyer drove in two runs for HPU.
In the first game, Nicole Kalakau batted 2 for 2 with two RBIs as HPU won, 5-2.
HPU improved to 22-17; BYUH fell to 10-28.
WATER POLO
UH WOMEN WIN PAIR
The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team won a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches yesterday at the Beach Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
In the first match, the No. 5 Rainbow Wahine took a 5-1 lead after the first period and beat No. 10 Long Beach State (14-11, 4-7), 10-7. Kelly Mason had three goals for Hawai'i.
In the afternoon match, Hawai'i took a 6-0 halftime lead and beat No. 18 Cal State Northridge (11-16, 1-9), 10-4. The Rainbows' Iefke Van Belkum scored three goals.
Hawai'i improved to 14-9 and 7-5.
TENNIS
LAJOLA REACHES FINAL
Dennis Lajola of 'Aiea advanced to the boys 18 singles final of the Easter Bowl tournament by routing No. 9 seed Johnny Hamui of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 6-2, 6-2, yesterday at Palm Springs, Calif.
Lajola, the No. 6 seed, will face top-seeded Donald Young of Atlanta in today's final at Riviera Resort and Racquet Club. Young swept No. 4 seed Clint Bowles of Tampa, Fla., 6-3, 6-0, yesterday.
BASEBALL
HPU, UH-HILO SPLIT
Kevin Matsumoto pitched a six-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 14-0, in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.
In the second game, Hilo benefitted from three errors to score three runs in the third inning en route to a 3-2 win.
Matsumoto walked three and struck out five in the opener.
Colton Silva batted 3 for 3 with four RBIs for HPU, which reached a season high in runs. Brandon Sato drove in three runs for the Sea Warriors.
