Former junior varsity coach Guy Kaniho has been named varsity boys volleyball coach at Kamehameha, athletic director Erv Kau announced yesterday.

Kaniho replaces his mentor Pono Ma'a, who resigned because of family and professional obligations.

Kaniho has led Kamehameha's junior varsity to Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships the past three seasons and a runner-up finish in 2002. He has also coached girls volleyball at Kaiser High and boys volleyball at Saint Louis.

"I'm extremely excited and ready to accept the challenges that come with the job," Kaniho said in a statement. "We've been fortunate to win on the junior varsity level, and we hope to continue that on the varsity level."

Kaniho is a former University of Hawai'i volleyball player and a 1986 Kamehameha graduate. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Hawai'i. He is a safety coordinator for The Queen's Medical Center.

OSHIRO WILL TAKE OVER KALANI VARSITY FOOTBALL

Glenn Oshiro, a 21-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department, has been named Kalani High School's varsity football coach, athletic director Gregory Van Cantfort said yesterday.

Oshiro, who replaces Greg Taguchi, is a 1979 Maryknoll graduate and a former Pac-Five football player. He has coached 23 years.

He served as Iolani School's running backs coach under Wendell Look and spent the past three years as Pac-Five's Intermediate and Mid Pacific Institute's Intermediate head coach and offensive coordinator.

Oshiro was the Police Activities League Director who implemented sports programs within a community-based area, specifically targeting teen gang areas in West O'ahu. He is currently assigned to the Central Patrol District, which extends from Manoa to Hawai'i Kai.
