Text message service gives you all the INFO

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i cell-phone users can now receive news, sports, weather, business and travel information via text messages.

Gannett Co., which owns The Honolulu Advertiser, recently partnered with 4INFO to provide quick updates for users who text a message to the number 44636.

It works like other text messaging services, with the user sending a query in the message's subject line to 4INFO. Within seconds, there is a reply. The messages are free, although your carrier might have an additional charge for text messaging. Most wireless providers typically charge 10 cents per message, but offer discounts when purchased in bundles.

Here's an example of how it works: To find out the weather forecast for your area, text the message "w" followed by your ZIP code to 44636 to receive an update. The service works on all major cellular service providers.

A few other examples:

  • Text "m" followed by your ZIP code for a list of movies playing in your area.

  • Text "DJI" for an instant quote from the Dow Jones Industrials.

  • Text "MLB" for baseball scores and news.
