Michelle Wie is back to training in a big way this week.
Two days after Wie finished a shot out of a playoff at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, trainer Paul Gagne came in from Canada to work with her on a new fitness program. She is working out with Gagne after school the rest of this week.
Or, as Wie said Sunday after her third consecutive top-three finish in a major: "It's another kind of workout kind of thing."
Wie, who gave up junk food for Lent, also gave a hint of her priorities: "Easter is coming up so I can eat junk food now," she said. "I'll be glad for that."
Her father, BJ, said he was "very pleased to observe a steady improvement in her ball striking" last week at Kraft. Wie hit 83 percent of the greens in regulation (60 of 72), best of any top-20 finisher.
BJ spoke to David Leadbetter, Wie's instructor, after the tournament and was told work would continue to make Wie's swing "more compact and consistent." Leadbetter will also "continue to work on her putting and short game," BJ said, "which requires a lot of tournament experiences."
Wie's next event is the SK Telecom Open, a South Korea stop on the men's Asian Tour. Tournament organizers said Wie would be in the country April 28 to May 8, to "meet fans" and play her eighth men's pro event. She has not made a cut, coming within one shot twice.
