HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Ching Ming to be observed

Advertiser Staff

The local Chinese community will kick off the annual Ching Ming season with a celebration at the Manoa Chinese Cemetery set for 9:30 to 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Ching Ming is a Buddhist tradition that involves generations of families visiting the gravesites of ancestors to honor them, according to Wesley Fong, a member of the Hawai'i Qing Ming Celebration organization, which is sponsoring the event. The activities are open to the public.

Food, drink and money are offered symbolically to the departed. Typically, families then sit down for a meal — sometimes at the gravesites.

The Ching Ming season begins today and runs through April 30, said group member James Young.
