Don't look now, but advanced students from the University of Hawai'i's Academy for Creative Media are starting to branch out with their own independent film projects.

Kevin Inouye — who made a big splash at the Lou-is Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival and two Asian-American film festivals on the Mainland with "The Tale of Haiku Jones" — is putting the finishing touches on his new independent film, "Wake."

Classmate and film partner Christopher Yogi is the producer and ACM instructor Anne Misawa served as director of photography. KTUH favorite LinusTheBand handled the score.

"Wake" premieres at HIFF's "Hawai'i Panorama 1" on Oct. 23.

Meanwhile, graduating ACM filmmaker Andrew Ma recently wrapped up three days of filming at a Manoa residence for his upcoming film "Love Abrasive."

The short — which promises to expose "the underbelly of romance and relationships" — stars John Galmiche, Jennifer Fairbanks, Jason Dusewicz, Liana Green, Claude Audant and Jeanna Garcia.

"I scoured the island for the right actors and found a lot of super-talented people right here who have what it takes but haven't had the opportunity until now," said Ma, 28.

The short, which was shot on Super 16 film, is in post production in Los Angeles.

Ma's "Game Over" was screened at last year's HIFF as part of a package of ACM short films. A talented actor in his own right, Ma can be seen in Hyun Shin's new film "Piko."

SPEAKING OF HIFF ...

"Hawaii Panorama 2" promises to be lively, with Gerard Elmore's "Valtor the Great" paired with Sandust Productions' "The Orb." Both will screen in HD.

"We have no idea what it's going to look like but in theory it should look really, really cool," says Elmore.

'LOST' AGAIN

As ABC discovered with last week's broadcast of "Destination Lost," there's no better lead-in for "Lost" than, well, "Lost."

The network is rebroadcasting last week's season premiere at 7 p.m., followed by the new episode "Adrift." ABC also plans to re-air the Oct. 12 episode "Everybody Hates Hugo," on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
