Daniels, defense carry Rams

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Running back Alex Daniels rushed for 241 yards and three touchdowns for Radford, but it was the defense that saved the day at the end in a 35-13 win against Moanalua last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association White football.

The Rams (4-1 overall, 4-0 White) earned sole possession of first place in the conference in handing the Menehunes (4-1, 3-1) their first loss of the season before a crowd of about 3,000 at John E. Velasco Stadium.

"It's great," Radford defensive end Russell Wantowski said. "All week they've been talking about Moanalua being the top team. We just wanted to come out and prove we're the top team."

The Rams took control early, taking a 21-0 lead into the half on two TD runs by Daniels, his first for 9 yards in the first period, and his second for 78 in the second. His TDs sandwiched a 47-yard punt return for a TD by Trevor Waldon in the first quarter.

But the Menehunes found their rhythm in the second half, pulling to 21-13 with 8:50 left in the game. An interception by Moanalua's J.D. Baba against Ryan Burciaga gave Moanalua possession at its 20. The Menehunes drove 80 yards in 13 plays with John Estores taking a pitch to the right from quarterback Stanford Leti to score from 5 yards out with no time showing third quarter to make it 21-7.

The Menehunes closed the deficit to 8 with 8:50 left in the game when Leti scored on a 47-yard run. But an unsportsmanlike penalty on the play forced Landon Watanabe to try his PAT from 35 yards, where he missed.

But the Rams snuffed any kind of momentum the Menehunes had gathered to that point when linebacker Bronson Leafa intercepted a screen pass from Leti, returning it 9 yards for a TD to make it 28-13.

"I just stayed with him (the intended receiver), read it and came up," Leafa explained.

"That was a great play by No. 9 (Leafa's jersey number)," Moanalua coach Arnold Martinez said.

The Rams closed the door with 2:25 left when Daniels scored on a 23-yard run.

The Menehunes struggled in the first half. They threatened with about four minutes left in the half, when a 21-yard pass from Leti to Savai'i Eselu and an 18-yard run by Ryan Monico put Moanalua to the Radford 5. But the Rams' defense only budged for 2 yards. On fourth-and-goal at the 3, linemen Willie Pulou and Wantowski stopped Monico, who had 65 yards on the night, to no gain. Four plays later, Daniels scored on his 78-yard run.
