There was no rain, yet Farrington managed to put a damper on McKinley's homecoming.

The Governors held the Tigers to 147 yards, including negative 15 rushing, in a 23-0 win in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East football last night at Aloha Stadium.

Farrington (3-3 overall, 3-1 East) won its third in a row after going 0-2 in nonleague games.

"As soon as we got off probation, we started to get a little rhythm," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said of the team's recent success, referring to players missing because of academic probation early in the season.

Meanwhile, the Tigers (2-3, 1-2) have been shut out and lost their starting quarterback to injury in consecutive games. Two weeks ago, Tilton Kaluna sustained a concussion in a 37-0 loss to Kahuku; last night, Austin Yoon broke his collarbone. Also, backup Joshua Nakama sustained a concussion, giving way to running back Haloki Leakona in the waning seconds. Kaluna is expected to return next week, McKinley coach William Moeava said.

"I don't think it would've been any different," Moeava said if Kaluna had played last night. "Our line just couldn't sustain their blocks."

"This was very important for us for playoffs," said Farrington defensive lineman John Sagapolutele, who had one of three Farrington sacks. "This was a good win for us."

But there is a bigger game ahead. The Governors travel to Kahuku next week for yet another homecoming they hope to spoil. The Red Raiders had their game with Kaiua postponed last night because of inclement weather.

"The boys are slowly, but surely catching on," Okimoto said. "But we got Kahuku next week."

Running back Kenneth Faumui gave Farrington what McKinley sorely needed: a consistent running game. Faumui had 125 yards on 18 carries, including a 4-yard TD run.

Farrington's defense took away any kind of running game from McKinley, forcing the Tigers into obvious passing situations. Heavy pressure made Yoon force some of his throws.

McKinley hardly threatened; its deepest penetration was to the Farrington 24. The closest the Tigers came to scoring — at least trying — was when Chelsie Sato's 42-yard field-goal try before the half reached the end zone, but short of the cross bar.

The game was a defensive struggle in the first quarter — mainly because each team was penalized five times — until the Governors put together a nine-play, 72-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard TD run by running back Hercules Sula. Larry Siuta's PAT made it 7-0 with 5:32 left in the second quarter; his 30-yard field goal with 1:55 left gave the Govs a 10-0 lead at the half.

A shanked punt inside McKinley territory gave Farrington an easy scoring opportunity from the Tigers' 19. Two plays later, Faumui scored with 29 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 16-0.

The Govenors sealed the game when Sula scored on a 2-yard run with 3:25 left in the game.

Farrington fumbled three times, losing the ball twice, but neither turnover hurt the Govs.

McKinley fumbled six times, losing the ball three times.

"It comes down to coaching, is what it is," Moeava said. "I take responsibility for that."
