Phase one of the removal of boulders above homes in Moanalua Valley has been completed and the contractor will now begin draping cable net over steep rock faces, according to state Rep. Glenn Wakai.
Prometheus Construction began work on the $1.4 million project in July and has smashed several boulders weighing up to 14 tons each on steep slopes above homes as part of an Army Corps of Engineers effort to prevent dangerous rockfalls.
The second phase will use PVC coated stainless steel cable nets to prevent rocks from rolling into resident's homes near 1400 Ala Aolani St.
The final phase, expected to be completed by the end of October, will involve helicopters lifting the bagged boulder fragments off the hillside.
After heavy rains and landslides damaged more than 30 properties near Tripler Army Medical Center in late 2003, the Corps surveyed the area and tagged 13 boulders for removal.
