KANE'OHE — The Ko'olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club will commemorate its 70th anniversary in 2007, but it doesn't want to do it alone so it is organizing a two-month-long celebration involving the whole community.

Partners are being sought and ideas laid out on the table, said Mahealani Cypher, with the civic club.

A planning meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Flamingo Restaurant in Windward City Shopping Center. Interested groups are invited to attend.

An initial meeting was held to hear people's reactions and the response has been positive so far, Cypher said.

The date has been set for August and September 2007, and the celebration would culminate with the Windward Ho'olaule'a.

"We'd like every facet of Kane'ohe to be celebrated," Cypher said, adding that the theme will be "I am Kane'ohe," with events saluting the people, history and heritage of this Windward town.

Possible ideas include canoe and sailing regatta, a poster contest, exhibits and lectures, a fundraiser at Coconut Island, a trivia contest, tours of historic places and gardens and a relay race from the Pali Lookout to He'eia State Park, Cypher said.

Partners would tie their event to the theme, she said.

"If they have something planned for 2007 during that period they can build it around this theme," Cypher said.

Hank Iida, president of the Castle High School Alumni Association, said many good ideas for the celebration have been suggested and more ideas are expected. Plans are in the embryonic stage and much will depend upon who volunteers, Iida said.

"A lot of people talk and they come up with ideas but they don't do nothing," he said. "We need people that are going to step forward and commit to doing certain things and do it."

Schools, civic groups, health providers, government, business groups, sports leagues and anyone operating in Kane'ohe are being sought to participate. For more information or to contact organizers, call Cypher at 247-3685.
