Lambert top player in beach volleyball

Mike Lambert, a Punahou School graduate, was crowned the top male player on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour Saturday after winning the Las Vegas Aquafina Shootout.
Lambert teamed with fellow Punahou grad Stein Metzger in the final to beat challenger Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, 21-18, 21-18. Lambert, who won all of his matches in Las Vegas, earned $29,750.
In the Shootout format, players were teamed with a variety of partners during the round-robin pool play, with the top player from each pool advancing to the final. A player then had to pick a partner from the remaining AVP players. That was an easy decision for Lambert.
"I had to look for a good defender," Lambert said on the AVP Web site. "Stein has been the best and most consistent player this year, especially as a defender. I have known and played with Stein for so long it was an easy transition."
Misty May-Treanor won the top female honor.

PLANOS ADVANCES
Kapalua, Maui's Lori Planos shot a 3-over-par 75 yesterday to earn a berth in match play at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship in Richmond, Texas.
Planos finished with a two-round qualifying score of 4-over 148, easily making the cut of 161. Five players at 162 will compete in a playoff this morning for the final two spots.
Kerry Postillion of Illinois, who shot 70—142 at the 6,124-yard Shadow Hawk Golf Club, will be the top seed in the match-play portion of the USGA event for amateurs 25 and older.
PADDLING
HAWAIIAN-MAUI WINS
Hawaiian-Maui captured the E Lau Hoe women's longdistance canoe race yesterday, finishing the course from Magic Island to Poka'i Bay in 4 hours, 18 minutes, 9.9 seconds.
Hui Lanakila finished second in the 33-canoe fleet in 4:21:7.6. Waikiki Beachboys 1 (4:23:19.6), Outrigger 1 (4:24:08.5) and Hui Lanakila (4:40:43.2) rounded out the top five.
