The Cameron Connection was in full swing last night.

Quarterback Cameron Higgins completed 9-of-14 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns — three to wideout Cameron Bayne — to lead No. 9 Saint Louis over defending Utah 5A state champion Davis, 54-26, in the opener of the HHSAA Foundation Football Classic at Aloha Stadium.

It was the second week in a row the Crusaders (2-1) racked up 50-plus points. They beat Farrington 59-0 last week. They open the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season on Saturday against Punahou.

Davis (1-3), from Kaysville, was ranked 21st in Utah polls.

Bayne had five receptions for 196 yards, including TD receptions of 26, 47 and 71 yards.

"Cameron (Higgins) was hitting his spots," Bayne said of his quarterback. "The DBs were sitting, so all I had to do was go. Cameron was on because his O-line gave him time."

Davis coach Ryan Bishop concurred.

"I think they have one of the best offensive lines I've seen," Bishop said. "I'm telling one of my assistants in the second quarter, you take those guys to University of Utah or BYU and they're as good as some of those guys. They move their feet, they block. They're very good."

The Darts (1-3) were down 35-0 before scoring with two seconds left in the half.

The Crusaders converted three turnovers into scores in taking a 35-7 lead at the half.

A fumble at the Darts' 25 eventually led to a 26-yard TD pass from Higgins to Bayne in the right corner of the end zone on fourth-and-11. A delay penalty forced Kenton Chun to make a 25-yard PAT.

On Saint Louis' next series, a penalty backed it up to its 14, setting up Higgins' 86-yard scoring strike to Chase Alcott, who dived into the end zone, getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that forced Chun to make a 35-yard PAT to make it 14-0 after the first quarter.

A second-quarter interception by Manoa Latu helped set up another Saint Louis score. Higgins hit Cameron in full stride down the left sideline for a 47-yard TD. Chun made a conventional PAT to make it 21-0 with 8:09 left in the half.

The Crusaders then marched 83 yards in five plays, four on runs, but the big play was a 40-yard pass from Higgins to Bayne that set up running back Cody Wells' 8-yard TD run to make it 28-0.

Linebacker Stephen Lei forced Darts quarterback Alex Hill to fumble and it was returned 11 yards by Scott Smith to the Darts' 20, setting up a 15-yard TD run by Preston Lynch on third-and-5 to make it 35-0.

The Darts finally scored with two seconds left in the half when Hill hit 6-foot-3 tight end Kalen Adams on a 5-yard TD pass to make it 35-7.

"Our team let penalties and turnovers get to us a little bit," Bishop said. "We had a couple drive killers with turnovers and we had a couple foolish penalties and you can't do things like that and beat a fine team like Saint Louis on the road."

Davis made it a game in the second half with Hill throwing two TD passes. He finished the night completing 14 of 29 for 212 yards.

"I'm proud of my kids because they battled in the second half," Bishop said. "I hope we can use that for the rest of our season."

Saint Louis also controlled the ground with 280 yards rushing, 113 by running back Wells. Alcott had two scoring runs including an 18-yarder in the third quarter.

Punahou dodged some major bullets in holding off Utah's defending state 4A champion Timpview in the feature game of the HHSAA Foundation Football Classic at Aloha Stadium.

The Buffanblu (3-0), ranked fourth in The Advertiser Top 10, handed the Thunderbirds (3-1), of Provo, their first loss of the season. Timpview entered the game ranked No. 1 in Utah.

A 46-yard touchdown pass by Brett Kan to Miah Ostrowski in the first quarter and a 19-yard field goal by River Kim in the third quarter was all the scoring Punahou could muster against an athletic and technically sound Timpview team, coached by Castle alumnus Louis Wong.

Punahou turned over the ball twice, only to have Timpview miss field goal tries of 45 and 30 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively. Timpview also had a fourth-quarter drive end at the Punahou 20.

Neither team could capitalize on turnovers in the first half, which the Buffanblu led 7-0.

The lone score came with 24 seconds left in the first quarter when a Timpview defender tried to make a play on a pass from Kan, but instead saw the pass sail over him to Ostrowski to complete a 46-yard TD to culminate a 94-yard drive.
