Hawai'i's crowded professional golf calendar at the beginning of the year will be full for the first two months of 2006 when the LPGA officially announces that it will bring a second event to O'ahu.
The Fields Open in Hawai'i will debut Feb. 23 to 25, 2006, at Ko Olina Golf Club, according to people involved in the event. It follows the SBS Open at Turtle Bay, Feb. 16 to 18 on the North Shore. The two Hawai'i stops are expected to be the first full-field events of the LPGA season.
The new LPGA stop is a partnership among a Japanese microchip company, the LPGA and Momentum, a sports management company involved in other pro golf events. It is a three-year deal. All three rounds will be shown on The Golf Channel and in Japan.
From 1990 to 1995 — soon after it opened — Ko Olina was home to the LPGA's Hawaiian Ladies Open.
Both LPGA sponsors are based in Asia (South Korea and Japan), so both events end on Saturday to allow a Sunday television broadcast overseas.
Jennifer Rosales won the inaugural SBS Open at Turtle Bay in February at the Palmer Course. She finished two shots ahead of Honolulu amateur Michelle Wie and Cristie Kerr. That tournament signed a five-year agreement initially.
