A 40-year-old man and two 8-year-old youths were injured in separate accidents yesterday morning at the Kahuku motocross track.

The man suffered hip and abdominal injuries and was taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, a city emergency services official said. His condition was listed as serious.

When crews arrived at the scene, they discovered a separate mishap in which two boys on motorbikes collided, with one possibly suffering a broken arm.

HONOLULU

AIRCRAFT NOISE MAY INCREASE

Residents living near Honolulu International Airport may notice an increase in aircraft noise tomorrow and Thursday as the Department of Transportation performs runway maintenance.

One runway will be closed from 12:30 to 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and Thursday. During the closure, aircraft will be diverted to other runways, which will result in increased flights over the Kalihi, downtown and Sand Island areas.

MORE WOMEN'S RESTROOMS SOUGHT

City Councilman Charles Djou is seeking what he calls "potty parity" between men and women at event facilities, such as theaters, stadiums and concert halls.

Djou said he will introduce a bill mandating such facilities allocate twice as much space for women's restrooms as men's restrooms.

"As a husband and a father who has often had to wait for my wife or daughter to get through a restroom line, I think a 'potty parity' bill makes sense," Djou said yesterday.

"My bill seeks to alleviate the all too common problem of long lines at women's restrooms at theaters, concert halls and other big event venues."

The bill, which was to be introduced today, would apply to new or renovated event facilities. It would not affect residential or non-spectator event commercial properties.

Djou said his bill is similar to legislation recently enacted by New York City. It was based on legislation crafted by the International Codes Council, an organization that issues model municipal building code standards, he said.

Djou's bill was expected to have its first reading Sept. 28.

PAHALA BRUSHFIRE UNDER CONTROL

Firefighters contained a five-acre brushfire near the old Pahala Mill yesterday.

No buildings or other structures were affected by the fire, which was reported at 1:07 p.m. and brought under control at 3:55 p.m. The cause of the fire was not known.

HELICOPTER LIFTS MAN FROM BEACH

A man was in fair condition last night after he nearly drowned in waters off Makalawena Beach in North Kona yesterday morning.

The man was swimming when he got caught in a current and swallowed water, fire officials said. Another person helped the man back to shore and called the Fire Department about 9:30 a.m.

The beach has limited access to vehicles and fire officials used a helicopter to lift the man to an awaiting ambulance. The man was taken to North Hawai'i Community Hospital for treatment.
