Stubborn fire on Kunia Road Advertiser Staff

A brushfire in a mostly inaccessible area on the Wai'anae side of Kunia Road was still burning at sunset yesterday.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Emmit Kane estimated that the fire, which started at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, had burned 160 acres but was not posing an immediate threat to property.
Two federal helicopters and one fire department copter were used for water drops yesterday, Kane said.

ACCIDENT CLOSES ROAD IN HAU'ULA
A section of Kamehameha Highway in Hau'ula was closed to traffic yesterday after a car hit a utility pole. The pole was severed and blocked the roadway in the area of 53-932 Kamehameha Highway between Makua Street and Pokowai Place, according to police who closed the highway to traffic in both directions at 6:04 p.m.
No power failures were reported, said Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Jose Dizon.
A man who was driving the car that struck the pole was taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center with serious injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.

BRUSHFIRE BATTLED NEAR PO'IPU
Kaua'i firefighters were fighting a brushfire yesterday near Po'ipu.
The fire, reported at 1:32 p.m., was not threatening property. Further details were not immediately available.
