Building peace through Buddha

"Buddhism and Peace: Engaged Buddhists in an Age of Global Societies and Violence," part of the 6th annual Futaba Lecture series, will begin at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 12 at Honpa Hongwanji's annex temple, 1727 Pali Highway.
Ajan Sulak Sivaraksa of Thailand, a former Buddhist monk and founder of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, will give the keynote lecture as well as discuss his personal experiences in building peace. The Rev. Sam Cox, University of Hawai'i religion professor Helen Baroni, Sister Joan Chatfield, Saleem Ahmed and others also will be on the program.

LECTURE TO FOCUS ON THAI CONFLICT
Nukul Ruttanadakul, a social activist from Thailand, will be the guest speaker today as part of the Rev. Yoshiaki Fujitani Interfaith Program.
Ruttanadakul will discuss "Managing the Resolution of Conflicts between Buddhists and Muslims in Southern Thailand" in a free lecture at 3 p.m. today at Chaminade University's Mystical Rose Oratory.
Ruttanadakul is a biological ecologist, ornithologist and environmentalist who has been at the Prince of Songhkla University in the ancient Thai city of Pattani since 1978. Ruttanadakul was born and raised in the southernmost part of Thailand, where the majority are Muslims of Malay heritage and speak a separate language called Yawi.
Also on the program: Bruce Barnes, UH Program on Conflict Resolution; Hakim Ouansafi of the Muslim Association of Hawai'i; Bunchar Pongpanich of the Southern Thailand Reconciliation Committee; and Tracey Wiltgen of the Mediation Center of the Pacific.

CHAPLAIN PRAYS FOR 'KINDNESS'
A peace prayer and keynote speech by Punahou Chaplain Yuki Hamada on "Peace Through Kindness" will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at Gedatsu Church, 6095 Summer St.
A potluck dinner will follow, and participants are asked to bring nonperishable items for a food drive.
