Children's book artist will read

In honor of the release of the book "A is for Aloha: a Hawai'i Alphabet," 'Aina Haina Public Library will feature illustrator Tammy Yee in a special Children's Storytime program at 10:30 a.m. today in the library's auditorium.
Yee collaborated with author U'ilani Goldsberry on the picture book and will read aloud, conduct a drawing demonstration and a make-it-and-take-it craft.

TRUCK OVERTURNS, SPILLS DIESEL FUEL
HILO — A fuel tanker that overturned on the Hawai'i Belt Road spilled about 2,700 gallons of diesel oil near Akaka Falls Road yesterday morning.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 8:46 a.m. and found the truck and tank trailer overturned about a quarter-mile south of Akaka Falls Road. The truck overturned onto its right side after the driver lost control, according to the Fire Department.
Fire officials said some of the diesel leaked into a nearby stream, but dirt dikes were used to contain the rest of the spilled fuel.
Workers from Hawai'i Petroleum siphoned the remaining fuel out of the truck and also siphoned up spilled fuel, fire officials said. County crews used absorbents to clean up the roadway.
NEW ACCESS ROAD TO KUA BAY OPENS
KEAHOLE — A 1.5-mile access road to Kua Bay and the Manini'owali section of Kekaha Kai State Park opened this week, along with new picnic tables and a disabled-accessible restroom.
The road provides residents and visitors with access to one of the region's "most beautiful coastal parks," said Peter Young, chairman of the state Department of the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The park entry road begins opposite the West Hawai'i Veterans Cemetery on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway and ends behind the beach at Kua Bay. The realigned entry road is a half-mile south of the old, unimproved road, which is closed.
Maniniowali LLC built the improvements as part of a land-exchange agreement with the DLNR.

SOLID-WASTE OFFICE IS MOVING
WAILUKU — The Solid Waste Division of the Maui County Department of Public Works and Environmental Management will be closed tomorrow to begin moving from the Kalana O Maui Building to new office space in Wailuku.
The division will be without telephone service all day. The office will reopen Monday at One Main Plaza, Suite 225. Telephone and fax numbers will remain the same, (808) 270-7875 and (808) 270-7843, respectively. The division's mailing address also will be unchanged at 200 S. High St., Wailuku, HI 96793.
SALVATION ARMY OFFERS GIFT HELP
The Salvation Army will accept applications until Nov. 28 from families needing assistance with gifts for children younger than 12 this holiday season.
Applicants must have photo identification for themselves and their children to verify age, verification of income and proof of address.
Applications may be obtained and filed at these Salvation Army locations: Kauluwela Mission Corps, 296 N. Vineyard Blvd. (521-6551); Kane'ohe Corps, 45-175 Waikalua Road (235-1408); and Leeward Corps, 98-612 Moanalua Loop (487-1636).
Drop off applications between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
