UH shuts out Utah Valley State

University of Hawai'i junior midfielder/forward Adria Campbell headed home the lone goal in the 10th minute in a 1-0 win over Utah Valley State in a soccer game yesterday in Orem, Utah.
Campbell's goal came off a corner kick by sophomore defender Shawn Higa.
It was the third game on a four-game road swing for the Rainbow Wahine (7-7-2), who played without star forward Natasha Kai for the second game in a row. Kai, who sprained her neck against Louisiana Tech last week, was replaced by her sister, Krisha, normally a defender.
Hawai'i returns to Western Athletic Conference play at San Jose State Friday. Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing is one win away from his 100th career win.
VOLLEYBALL
HPU'S MARTIN NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball player Barbara Martin was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week yesterday after leading the Sea Warriors to three wins last week.
Martin, a junior middle blocker, averaged five kills per game in the three matches, and hit .531. She had seven kills against Ursuline College (Ohio) last Tuesday, and 33 total kills in two matches against conference rival Hawai'i-Hilo on Friday and Saturday. For the week, she totaled 40 kills, 16 digs, six blocks, and four aces. This is Martin's second Player of the Week honor this season.
HPU (17-1) also climbed one spot to third in the AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released yesterday. Brigham Young-Hawai'i (14-3) also moved up one spot to 20th. Nebraska-Kearney (22-1) was ranked No. 1.
UH WOMEN REMAIN NO. 11 IN COACHES' POLL
The University of Hawai'i's women's volleyball team remained No. 11 in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll released yesterday.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-6) host Utah State on Thursday and San Jose State on Saturday in Western Athletic Conference matches at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Nebraska (18-0) is No. 1 and received 55 of 60 first-place votes. Washington (16-0) is No. 2 and received the other five first-place votes. Penn State, Florida and Stanford round out the top five.
UH MEN WILL HOST EXHIBITION MATCHES
The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will host exhibition matches against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 28 and 29.
The first match will be played at 7 p.m. at Stan Sheriff Center. The second is at 7 p.m. at Kahuku High School.
General admission is $5 for the match at the Stan Sheriff Center, and go on sale Oct. 18. Tickets also can be purchased by phone at 944-2697 or by visiting HawaiiAthletics.com.
KITEBOARDING
MAI, LENTEN PREVAIL IN KING OF THE AIR
Susi Mai of the Dominican Republic won the women's division and Rueben Lenten of the Netherlands took the men's division of the 7th Red Bull King of the Air on Saturday at Ho'okipa, Maui.
Mai beat current Professional Kiteboard Riders Association champion Kristin Boese of Germany for an unprecedented third consecutive Queen of the Air title in what is considered kiteboarding's premier event.
"I did like five heats (Saturday) and I am just really tired," said Mai, who won $1,750. "Happy, but really tired."
Lenten beat kiteboarding legend Robby Naish of Maui to pocket $4,500.
"Robby's the man ... he charges, he takes big airs," Lenten said. "To beat him at this special event, I'm stoked."

PUNAHOU BOYS COACH LOUIS JOHNSON RESIGNS
Louis Johnson has resigned after five years as head coach of Punahou's boys track and field program, the state's largest last season with 262 athletes on three levels (varsity, JV and intermediate).
Under Johnson, the Buffanblu won Interscholastic League of Honolulu and state championships in 2001 and 2002.
Punahou athletic director Tom Holden said last night Johnson has resigned mainly because of a recent job change that does not allow him the same flexibility to be the Buffanblu's head coach.
Prior to becoming head coach in August of 2000, Johnson was an assistant with the program for 13 years.
"Louis coaches with great passion and dedication and will be sorely missed by the Punahou athletic community," Holden said in a statement.
The varsity and JV teams had a combined 128 athletes this past season and the intermediate team had 134. Johnson oversaw all three teams.
Holden is taking applications to fill the position. Interested coaches should send a resume to him by Nov. 15 c/o Punahou School, 1601 Punahou St., Honolulu HI 96822.

COSTAS OPENS 1-STROKE LEAD AT OCC SENIORS
Two-time champion Art Costas shot a 2-over-par 73 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational yesterday.
Costas, who won the tournament in 1995 and 1996, is playing in the super senior division (65-older). He leads Jim Ono, also in the super senior division, and Dick Sieradzki, who shot 74s. Sieradzki leads the senior division (55-64).
Francis O'lena shot a 75, followed by David Ishikawa, Daniel Park, Bruce Smith III, Wendell Kop and defending champion George Yamamoto at 76.
The second and final round begins at 8:40 a.m. today
RAINBOW WAHINE 12TH AT N.M. STATE TOURNEY
The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot a 38-over-par 614 and was 12th out of 21 teams after the first two rounds of Price's Give Em Five Intercollegiate yesterday at New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
New Mexico (296-295) led with a 15-over 591, followed by Missouri (300-392—592) and San Francisco (291-304—595). UH shot 305-309. The best four of five scores are counted for the team scoring.
New Mexico's Mikaela Backstedt (71-69) and Missouri's Denise Munzlinger (71-69) lead with 4-under 140s.
Idaho sophomore Kelly Nakashima, a Baldwin (Maui) High alum, shot a 72-74 and was tied for seventh at 146.
Hawai'i's Dale Gammie was tied for 19th at 150 (72-78).
LACROSSE
HAWAI'I TO HOST 15TH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT
US Lacrosse's Hawai'i Chapter will host 28 national and international teams at the 15th annual Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational Tournament, Oct. 29 and 30 at Kapi'olani Park.
Divisions include masters, elite and women. A record 13 teams are entered in the women's division, according to tournament organizers.
Games on Oct. 29 will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on six fields. The championship games are at 2 p.m. for the masters division and 3 p.m. for the women and elite divisions on Oct. 30.
The public is invited; there is no admission charge.
