Playoff berths in OIA remain up for grabs
Advertiser Staff
Major League Baseball started its season six months ago, and still is two weeks from reaching a conclusion.
The O'ahu Interscholastic Association started its football season on Aug. 26, and after tomorrow it will be over for six of the 22 teams (27 percent).
Time really does fly in OIA football these days, especially in the Red Conference, which ends its regular season schedule this weekend.
Four teams in the Red Eastern Division — Kailua (2-3 OIA), Kaimuki (1-4), McKinley (2-3) and Roosevelt (1-4) — have a chance to extend their season by winning this weekend.
Kailua and McKinley, in particular, control their own destiny and can secure playoff berths with victories over Roosevelt and Castle, respectively.
Kaimuki (vs. Kahuku) and Roosevelt need a win to stay alive.
Kailua can afford a loss tonight, but only if McKinley defeats Castle tomorrow. If Kailua loses and McKinley wins, the Surfriders are done because in the case of a three-way tie between McKinley, Kailua and Roosevelt finishing at 2-4, Roosevelt would secure the fourth seed and McKinley would get the fifth seed by head-to-head tiebreaker.
The Red West season also concludes this weekend, but its playoff berths and seedings have been settled. The order is Mililani, Wai'anae, Kapolei, 'Aiea and Leilehua.
'Aiea and Leilehua will begin playoff action next week against the East's No. 5 and No. 4 seeds, respectively. The top three teams in the East and West receive first-round byes.
The White Conference has one regular season weekend remaining after this. Radford, Moanalua and Campbell have secured playoff berths. One more berth has yet to be determined.
In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the key game is tonight's rematch between Punahou and Saint Louis.
Punahou (5-1 overall, 2-1 ILH) is ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media; Saint Louis (4-2, 2-1) is ranked No. 6.
Punahou defeated the Crusaders 31-20 on Sept. 17. In that game, Saint Louis led 14-3 early in the third quarter before the Buffanblu ran off 28 straight points.
Kickoff for tonight's game is set for 7:30 at Aloha Stadium, following the 4:45 game between No. 5 Iolani (5-2) and Pac-Five (2-5).
In the other ILH matchup, No. 2 Kamehameha (5-2) plays host to Damien (3-3) at 7 p.m.
