Sand Isle bridge work wraps up
All lanes of the Sand Island bridge will be reopened late this afternoon, following a 16-month project to replace the deteriorating metal deck on the two town-bound bridge lanes, the state said last night.
During the project, traffic was limited to one lane in each direction on the adjacent concrete bridge. The project cost more than $5 million.
The project replaced metal grating on the 40-year-old bridge. The state had been forced to make three emergency repairs in the six months before work started in June 2004.

SITES ADDED TO HISTORIC REGISTER
The Hawai'i Historic Places Review Board added new sites to the Hawai'i Register of Historic Places.
Lemon Wond Holt Residence was deemed a good example of a residence constructed in Hawai'i in the late 1920s to early 1930s, the board said.
Laniakea, the Asa and Lucy Thurston House site, is significant for its associations with Asa and Lucy Thurston and their profound involvement with the Protestant missionary movement in Hawai'i from 1820 to 1861, the board said.
Lyman Residence was cited as one of the few remaining shingle-style homes of the early 1900s related to the suburban developments of Honolulu.
Mervin and Marian Williams Residence is one of the few residences of the modern style of the possible 100 houses placed on the Hawai'i or National Registers of Historic Places, the board said.
Skorpen Residence was called a good example of a Dean Lake residence constructed in Hawai'i in the late 1920s/early 1930s on an eclectic use of various American house forms with an adaptation to the climate in Hawai'i.
Properties placed on the Hawai'i and National Registers of Historic Places are eligible for tax incentives, grants and funding to support upkeep of the registered property. See www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/hpd/archilinks.htm for details.

STUDENTS SEEK HI 5¢ CONTAINERS
Kailua High School's Project Graduation 2006 will have a HI 5¢ can and bottle fundraising drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school's parking lot. Proceeds will go toward the school's 2006 Project Graduation, an all-night party that provides students with a safe and drug- and alcohol-free graduation celebration. Call 261-3634.
