Moanalua freshman Tadd Fujikawa beat the course and 83 elite junior boys yesterday to take the opening-round lead in the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior, at Mobile, Ala.

Players from 25 states, Canada and China are in the event, including Philip Francis, the country's top-ranked junior.

Fujikawa, 14, shot a 5-under-par 67 in just his second American Junior Golf Association tournament. He leads by four at Magnolia Grove Golf Club's Falls Course going into today's second round. The tournament, originally scheduled last month and postponed by Hurricane Katrina, concludes tomorrow.

California's Angela Park, who beat U.S. Amateur champion Morgan Pressel in a playoff last year at this event, shot a 70 to take a one-shot advantage in the girls division.

Fujikawa hit 12 of 14 fairways. He had three birdies and an eagle on the front nine, making the turn in 32. He added three more birdies on the back nine and had three bogeys on the day.

"I was hitting my driver really good, although my irons could have been a little better," Fujikawa said.

Fujikawa, this year's Hickam Amateur champion, finished in the Top 20 at his first AJGA tournament in June. He found it to be a learning experience.

"I just need to stay consistent," Fujikawa said. "I need to not get too high and keep scoring well."
