The Rotary Club of West Honolulu chose the Rev. William Hiiakaikapoliopele Kaina for the 2005 David Malo award, established in 1957 to recognize and honor a person of Hawaiian ancestry who has made a noteworthy contribution in their chosen field of endeavor. Kaina receives his award tonight at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Kaina helped with the Hawaiian Hymnal Committee, resulting in the publication of Himnal Haipule 1972 to 1974 and Na Himeni O Ka Ekalesia from 1999 to 2001. Also, in 1984, he became the ninth pastor at Kawaihao Church, retiring in 1997. He also served as pastor at the Waianae Protestant Church 2003-2004 and is currently Papa Makua at the United Church of Christ, serving as the coordinator of Hawaiian Christian Ministry for 48 Hawaiian Congregational Christian Churches statewide.

CHURCH TO SHOW DOCUMENTARY

"Deconstructing Supper," the 2002 documentary directed by Marianne Kaplan, will screen at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.

The film has renowned chef John Bishop leading viewers on an eye-opening journey into the billion-dollar battle to control global food production. Discussion follows the screening

BUDDHIST, MUSLIM CONFLICT DISCUSSED

Professor Nukul Ruttanadakul will discuss "Managing the Resolution of Conflicts Between Buddhists and Muslims in Southern Thailand" as part of the the Rev. Yoshiaki Fujitani Interfaith Program at 3 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Mystical Rose Oratory of Chaminade University.

Ruttanadakul was born and raised in the southernmost part of Thailand, where the majority are Muslims of Malay heritage and speak a separate language called Yawi.
