TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Everwood," 8 p.m., WB. Last week's season-opener was filled with sharp twists and fresh dialogue. It ended with the surprise return of Ephram, Andy's son. Now the show settles into its regular pattern — some good moments, blotted out by people who talk too much and think too much about everything. Andy reverts to his old ways, almost instantly sabotaging things. Others dive into despair. Given all that, we're glad to see Nina bumble with her trendy restaurant and Hannah fumble her relationship with the hunky Bright. Both stories are silly, but they pull us out of the mass funk.

OF NOTE

"The Frighteners" (1996), 6 p.m., Sci Fi Channel. Prior to his towering triumph with the "Lord of the Rings" movies, director Peter Jackson was known for a few quirky movies like this one. Michael J. Fox plays a sort of scam ghost buster who suddenly confronts real ghosts. It's an entertaining tale with fun sight gags.

"Alias," 7 p.m., ABC. Balthazar Getty, a first-rate actor, joins the cast as an agent. Meanwhile, Syd is trying to find her friend's killer.

"Joey," 7 p.m., NBC. In its second season, this show is turning the sometimes-suffering Joey into a movie star. He takes advantage of his stunt man, who gets the blame for Joey's womanizing. He also draws the wrath of a crewmember.

"Will & Grace," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Last week, Karen was startled to learn that her "late husband" Stanley is alive. Will tries hard to comfort her. Meanwhile, Grace appears on Jack's talk show — and seems to draw the anger of every gay man in New York.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. When a woman's body is found at the bottom of the stairs, Grissom suspects murder.

"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. Now that Sam has foolishly dumped Kovac, the two have trouble working the same shift. Meanwhile, the nurses have another problem: Their new boss is an authoritative type, played by Kirsten Johnston of "3rd Rock From the Sun."

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. Here's an hour so dark and brooding that viewers will merely feel awful afterward. It starts with a quiet teen having his only friend turn against him. From there, things just get worse.
