A 42-year-old Honolulu man was fatally injured Monday night when the moped he was riding collided with a car on Lanikuhana Avenue in Mililani near the Wal-Mart store.

The city Department of the Medical Examiner identified the man as Valentino Paglinawan.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said he was traveling south on Lanikuhana when an Acura Integra going north turned left in front of him at Maka'imo'imo Street about 10:20 p.m.

Paglinawan, who was not wearing a helmet, broadsided the Acura, flew over the hood and came to rest on the pavement, investigators said. He was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital in critical condition with severe head injuries and died there at 12:07 a.m. yesterday, police said.

The 18-year-old Wahiawa man driving the Acura was not injured. Investigators do not believe that he was speeding or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Speeding by the moped may have have been a contributing factor in the crash, police said. It had not been determined if Paglinawan was operating it under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Paglinawan's death was the 70th traffic fatality on O'ahu this year, compared with 60 for the same period last year.

Eight of the traffic fatalities this year have been moped riders. Before Monday night, the most recent moped fatality occurred July 10 on Hakimo Road in Wai'anae near Ulehawa Street.
