Big Island police have identified a man who was killed Tuesday when he was struck by a vehicle at the Kahuku scenic lookout in Ka'u as Leonard Kainoa Sr., 52, of Na'alehu.
Kainoa was on foot when he was struck at 11:30 p.m. by a car driven by a 41-year-old Wai'ohinu woman, police said.
It has not been determined whether alcohol was a factor in the accident, and no other details were available.
Police said they have opened a negligent homicide investigation into the case, which is normal procedure for traffic deaths. An autopsy has been ordered.
