TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Braveheart" (1995), 5 and 9 p.m., Bravo. Sprawling and intense, this is a great movie to see on a giant movie screen. It may or may not be ideal TV viewing for a gentle holiday weekend. Mel Gibson directed and stars as William Wallace, who led Scottish rebels against England. The film captures the beauty of the countryside, of Sophie Marceau and of Gibson and his warriors. The story eventually sags because history didn't provide a satisfying ending. Yet, despite that, "Braveheart" is a terrific film, winner of Academy Awards for best picture, director and more.

"The Reading Room," 7, 8:45 and 10:45 p.m., Hallmark Channel. A wealthy widower (James Earl Jones) quietly sets up a storefront in his impoverished neighborhood. Anyone can stop in to read or get a soda. It's all free. That simple story is given occasional crises. It's a slim tale, given substance by director Georg Stanford Brown and his solid cast. That includes Kathryne Dora Brown (daughter of the director and Tyne Daly) as a reading coach.

OF NOTE

"Cold Case," 7 p.m., CBS. The murder, in 2000, of an assistant district attorney remains unsolved. Now the victim is being posthumously accused of embezzling. His widow wants the case reopened.

"The Most Outrageous TV Moments," 7 p.m., NBC. This was the first of the series of specials the network keeps repeating.

"The Runaway Bride" (1999), 7:30 p.m., NBC. Long before the news stories about a runaway bride, this film was made by the "Pretty Woman" team of Julia Roberts, Richard Gere and director Garry Marshall. Gere plays a newspaper columnist spouting about a woman who leaves guys at the altar. She is played by Roberts, who is terrific as usual. Alas, Gere's character is such a jerk that we aren't eager for them to get together.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. Two women have been tarred and buried alongside each other. Sara (Jorja Fox) is disdainful of one of the people she must interview, leading to complaints about her. That's when she shares some personal details.

"Rome," 8 p.m., HBO. If you missed the season finale on Sunday catch it now. It's tough and taut with two key deaths — one expected one not — packing an impact.

"Titanic" (1997), 9 p.m., HBO. The late-late night crowd can settle down after "Rome" to savor this Oscar-winning blend of romance and disaster. Others can assign their VCRs or DVRs.

"Saturday Night Live," 10:30 p.m., NBC. Here's a rerun, with Steve Carell as host. Kanye West is musical guest, setting up a funny little scene in which producer Lorne Michaels frets that West will turn political as he did during NBC's flood-relief concert.
