Tomita named deputy fire chief

Honolulu Fire Chief-designate Kenneth Silva has named Assistant Chief Alvin Tomita to the position of deputy chief, the city announced yesterday.
Tomita is a 30-year veteran of the Honolulu Fire Department. He has administered the department's budget and headed its personnel services and information technology divisions.
Silva and Tomita begin their new jobs Jan. 16, following the retirement of Fire Chief Attilio Leonardi.
MEALS ON WHEELS NEEDS SUPPORT
Lanakila Meals on Wheels will deliver more than 1,000 hot turkey dinners this year.
However, the holiday feed does not receive state or federal financing, so the program is seeking individuals willing to adopt a senior to pay for the cost of the Thanksgiving meal.
More than 300 volunteers, including Vietnam Veterans/SBU Bikers' Association, service clubs, military groups and businesses, will pack and deliver the food, said Marian Tsuji, Lanakila president and CEO.
Rainbow Sales & Marketing is a major contributor to the Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels, Tsuji said.

CIVIC CLUBS WILL CELEBRATE MERGER
The Ko'olaupoko and Kualoa-He'eia Hawaiian civic clubs will celebrate their merger with the installation of officers and a salute of the 30th anniversary of the Kualoa-He'eia Hawaiian Civic Club at a 5 p.m. dinner Dec. 3 at Ko'olau Golf Course Clubhouse.
The public is invited to the $40 prime-rib dinner and can make reservations by calling 239-9334.
The merged group will be known as the Ko'olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club, which has elected kupuna Elizabeth Lau of 'Ahuimanu as its president.
Lau said the merger will strengthen the club's ability to provide community outreach and raise public awareness of the Hawaiian culture and heritage of the Kane'ohe Bay region, which extends from Mokapu to Kualoa.

STORYTELLER WILL ENTERTAIN KIDS
In celebration of Children's Book Week, the Hawai'i Kai Public Library will host storyteller Joe Miller, who will perform "Tales of Wonder" about heroes and heroines at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Miller, a religion teacher and acting campus minister at Maryknoll High School, has been a professional storyteller for 20 years.

MAUI BOATING OFFICE WILL MOVE
The state's Maui district boating and recreation office in Wailuku will be closed from Monday to Dec. 5 while it is being moved.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources Boating and Ocean Recreation office will move from Wells Street to 210 Imi Kala Drive, Suite 205, in the Millyard Industrial area of Wailuku.
The old office closes Monday and the new office opens Dec. 5.
Anyone needing assistance in the interim can call the Lahaina Harbor office at 243-5818 or Ma'alaea Harbor office at 662-4060.
The Wailuku office phone number will remain 243-5824, fax 243-5829.
BIG ISLAND
MINOR QUAKE DOES NO DAMAGE
HILO — A small earthquake of magnitude 3.8 rattled parts of the Big Island yesterday, but no damage was reported.
The temblor at 9:57 a.m. was centered about two miles west-southwest of Pohakuloa, but officials at the Army's Pohakuloa Training Area said they didn't feel it.
Neil Gyotoku, plans and operations officer for Hawai'i County Civil Defense, said there were no reports of damage.
CENTRAL O'AHU
KIPAPA GULCH HIGHWAY CLOSING
A section of Kamehameha Highway in Kipapa Gulch will be closed in both directions tonight because of roadwork, the state Department of Transportation said.
The road will be closed from Ka Uka Boulevard to Lanikuhana Avenue from 7:30 tonight to 3:30 a.m. tomorrow.
The DOT recommends motorists use H-2 Freeway during the road closure.
THREE LIBRARIES PLAN SPECIAL EVENTS
Public libraries in Mililani, Kapolei and 'Aiea are featuring free special events on identity theft, Christmas ornaments and a new novel discussion, respectively.
Mililani Library, 94-450 Maka'imo'imo St., will host "Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft," a one-hour program presented by the Hawai'i State Federal Credit Union, on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Call 627-7470.

MONEY SOUGHT FOR DIAPER FUND
One By One Hawai'i Foundation is raising money to meet its goal of collecting $30,000 to provide 1,000 cases of diapers to needy families.
Each case contains 240 diapers and can help a family for a month.
For more than a year, the foundation has also provided washing and drying services for the homeless and financially challenged.
The Weekend Wash program grew out of annual Thanksgiving and Christmas feedings at Ko Olina Resort and Marina.

UH WARNS OF TELEPHONE SCAM
The University of Hawai'i yesterday issued a warning about a telephone scam in which a caller asks for personal information while seeking support for a "renovation project" at the Leeward Community College library.
The college is not soliciting money for the library, UH said. For information, or to verify the authenticity of a solicitation, call LCC head librarian David Coleman at 455-0673.
