Restaurateur to sell eateries

The owner of the Sunset Grill at Restaurant Row is selling the eatery for $185,000, including all food and liquor inventory.
Fred Livingston said he is selling both the Sunset Grill and the Crouching Lion Inn in Ka'a'awa because he wants to spend more time on his real estate ventures. He has developed seven subdivisions on the Big Island and is developing an oceanfront subdivision in the Puna District.
Don Ho's Island Grill, which Livingston also owns, is not for sale, he said. Livingston has owned a number of local restaurants over the years, including the Tahitian Lanai, which was demolished to make way for a new Hilton Hawaiian Village Tower; Trattoria and Davey Jones Ribs, both demolished for the Outrigger Lewers Street Project; and Matteo's, which he sold in 2003.
CHAIN TO OPEN SMOOTHIE STORES
Kahala Corp., an Arizona-based quick service restaurant franchiser, said it has entered into an agreement to open 10 Surf City Squeeze smoothie stores in Hawai'i within the next five years.
The Hawai'i franchise will be run by Shaun Khan, an entrepreneur from Orlando, Fla. Along with Surf City Squeeze, Kahala Corp. franchises include Great Steak & Potato Co., TacoTime, Samurai Sam's Teriyaki Grill, RANCH ONE Grilled Chicken, Frullati Cafe & Bakery, Rollerz and Wafflo. The restaurants have 1,000 locations nationwide with $450 million a year in sales.
A records manager at a company in Orlando, Khan, 35, has never worked in the restaurant industry, but said he decided to become a Surf City Squeeze franchisee because he views this opportunity as an "exciting and very wise financial investment." Khan said he plans to open his first Surf City Squeeze early next year at a kiosk location in Waikiki.
BUSINESS LEADERS TO BE HONORED
Junior Achievement of Hawaii has begun accepting nominations for the 2006 Hawaii Business Hall of Fame Laureate nominations.
A selection committee composed of business leaders will review the nominations and choose "outstanding individuals for their exemplary contribution and leadership skills which serve to inspire Hawaii's youth," according to Junior Achievement.
