KANE'OHE WETLAND PROJECT — Volunteers are needed Dec. 10 to help the Sierra Club clear a wetland of mangrove to create habitat for endangered water birds at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i. Because the base is a secured military facility, volunteers must provide name and Social Security number in advance and bring a signed waiver. Call Annette Kaohelauli'i at 235-5431.

FREE CHRISTMAS TREES — The annual Christmas Tree-Cutting Service Trip to remove pine trees and seedlings from Pu'u Nianiau at Haleakala will be Dec. 10. Children welcome; meet at 9 a.m. at the Pu'u Nianiau turnout below the park entrance. Bring gloves, warm clothing, sun and rain protection, and hand saws (no chain saws). Call (808) 572-9724.

CRATER OVERNIGHTER — The Friends of Haleakala National Park will conduct a two-night service trip at Kapalaoa Dec. 10-12 to remove the invasive species plantago. Call (808) 876-1673.

ALA WAI CLEANUP — Join Sierra Club in using scoopers and nets to collect debris from Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor on Dec. 17. Meet at 8 a.m. at the harbor master's office. Bring sturdy shoes, hat, thick rubber gloves, sunscreen, water. Call Deborah Blair at 955-4168 or Sharon Moran at 277-2549.

MAKIKI WAI HELPERS — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Hawai'i Nature Center are looking for help Saturday to make trail improvements, remove weeds and plant native plants along the Makiki trail, as part of the Makiki Wai (Watershed Awareness Initiative). Water, gloves and tools provided; bring long pants and long-sleeve shirt, shoes or boots, insect repellent and lunch. POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION — The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning and restoring the wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed and mangrove 8:30-11:30 a.m. Dec. 3. KA'ENA POINT — Join Sierra Club in service project Dec. 3 to protect coastal ecosystem at Ka'ena Point Natural Area Reserve by removing invasive plants. Reservations required; call Deborah Blair at 955-4168.

WEED & POT CLUB — Maui Nui Botanical Garden's Weed & Pot Club meets 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at 150 Kanaloa Ave. in Kahului to weed, rake, trim or transplant nursery plants, and perform other work. Tools, gloves and drinking water provided; bring sunscreen, wear shoes.

KANAHA WILDLIFE REFUGE — Weekly volunteer workdays at Maui's Kanaha Pond Wildlife Refuge, 7:30 a.m. Thursdays. Call (808) 572-6338.

MORNING TRAIL SWEEPERS — Lyon Arboretum in Manoa seeks early morning walkers to hike the arboretum trails, clearing fallen palm fronds and other debris from paths. Call volunteer coordinator Donna Schult at 988-0464. The arboretum also has volunteer work party days on the first, third and fourth Saturdays of each month.
