Central Union plans 'Messiah'

Central Union Church's 100-voice Oratorio Choir and Handel Festival Chamber Orchestra will present the 58th annual "Messiah" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 27.

They will perform the Christmas portion of the "Messiah" in the sanctuary, with Noel Lovelace, minister of music at Central Union, conducting. Soloists will be: Catherine Goto, soprano; Diane Koshi, mezzo-soprano; Kalani Brady, tenor; and Christopher Kelsey, bass.

ADVENT MARKED AT LUTHERAN CHURCH

The Lutheran Church of Ho-nolulu will present "Advent Procession," with readings, carols, motets and hymns accompanied by images of art, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 27.

Its choir, joined by the Compline Choir, will sing pieces by Hallock, Lister, Maxwell Davies, Byrd, Goldschmidt, Getchaninoff, Wood, Stanford, Cleobury and K. Crosier. Slides of medieval and Renaissance art will be projected on screen to enhance the musical experience.

METHODISTS PLAN SPECIAL SERVICE

For its centennial celebration, the Hawaii District of the United Methodist Church is planning a special service at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 3 at McKinley High School, followed by a potluck lunch at the school cafeteria.

Afterward, there will be music and dances by various ethnic groups of the United Methodist churches.

The first session of what was then called the Hawaii Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church was officially recognized Dec. 27-31, 1905, with Bishop John W. Hamilton presiding. Today, the local church has grown to include 29 English-language services, 12 in Tongan, seven in Korean, four in Samoan and two in Japanese, with a church in Guam as well as one in Saipan.
