Fire ritual will be held tomorrow

Shingon Buddhist monks perform a Saito Goma fire ritual at the Shingon Shu Hawai'i temple. The goal of tomorrow's service is to burn away the negative karmic effects of human passions.

Shingon Shu Hawai'i, a Buddhist temple at 915 Sheridan St., will have a Saito Goma fire ritual at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The open-air fire service will be performed by the Daigo sect of Shingon Buddhism, the oldest school that performs this ritual, the goal of which is to burn away the negative karmic effects of human passions.

CHRISTMAS PROJECT SEEKS GIFTS FOR KIDS

Operation Christmas Child, the world's largest Christmas project, has set Nov. 14 to 21 as National Collection Week. More than 1,800 locations — including Central Union Church in Hono-lulu — will be open to collect millions of shoebox gifts for the needy, filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and a personal note. Last year, gifts from the U.S. and 10 other countries were hand-delivered to more than 7.4 million children.

INTERFAITH FORUM LOOKING FOR IDEAS

Organizers of an interfaith forum set for June at Chaminade University have put out a call for papers, pre-organized panels and roundtable submissions.

Specifically, they seek papers from economists, businesspeople, philosophers, theologians, historians, political scientists with an interest in international relations, sociologists, medical care workers, peace researchers, conflict resolution specialists, lawyers, environmentalists and geographers as well as those engaged in interfaith action projects.

Send one-page abstracts (include a working title, authors, discipline and field, address, affiliation and e-mail address) to Professors David L. Coleman at dcoleman@chaminade.edu and Kamran Mofid, kmofid@btopenworld.com, before Jan. 15.
